Garyjpaterson stick to your ideas, your on the right track and best placed to mix the two what the blind exec believes he needs and what should be done !!

Yeah its a shame LR are becoming more distant to their roots, but the facts are they have done their research; The defender is not selling anymore, people (the masses) want economy, safety along with the premium look and feel. They've seen the reaction to the Evoque, its expensive but its selling ridiculous numbers, thats where the money's at.

Designing at LR would be a dream, so im not going to completely discard the advice we were given, as i want to do my utmost to impress the design team.

Maybe Land Rover design bosses should start looking at owners forums like this one as they don't seem to get what their loyal customers actually want.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but it seems like the people on this forum are the enthusiasts, who love off roading and whatnot. Thats cool, and its a shame LR may not be providing to this market for much longer, but it seems like that market is relatively small.

On thursday we are presenting our design directions to our tutor and LR designer. They will pick 3 for the whole class to work individually on for the next month or so.

After that, the top 3 designs are picked again, then the class is split into 3 teams to finalise the designs, and produce quality visuals, clay scale models etc.

lr has plenty of models for the masses 1 more freelander disco look-a-like wont bring more sales just split , i think its a mistake killing a utility vehicle even if it is a small seller

Land rover is just a brand used by Tata to make money, you can see the logic behind ditching the relatively small market that the defender has in favour of charging silly money for posh "urban" models that people seem willing to throw their money at.

There's lots of love for the simplicity of old land rover designs on here, but the reality is that there's a very small number of members who are driving brand new landies!

Luckily the spares market for old land rovers is good and should help us keep our old land rovers going for years to come.

So as far as LR are concerned we are not a consideration as we (generally) dont provide the funds for new car sales. May even be fair to say we are a pain for keeping the older ones going!

Are LR going the same way as most manufacturing seems to be going, build-in some obsolescence, once it breaks, through it out, recycle it, get a new one?

So for a young designer, where should they go, somewhere LR havent gone before? Is there such a place?

Hope things go full circle, "lets make a vehicle thats tuff, goes for ever and can be fixed with basic knowledge and tools".

What will our kids kids be driving in 50 years time I wonder?

Just as a bit of a side note, what are the thoughts on the inward headlights of the S1 early S2 models?

Ready for a comeback? Obviously side lamps near the edge on the wing to meet legislation.

In thing at the moment is selective/cornering lights and they're chocolate teapot for that.

Survey says "No"

That has to be the most annoying and most pointless thing ever. Really grips my **** when I see it on modern cars. I mean what the #### is the indicator for? And if the person driving can't see well enough into the road without a poxy wee light coming on whilst they turn then they shouldn't have a bloody license in the first place.

****s. I hate modern cars

The problem with landy forums is that most peeps on them will never buy a brand new landy so therefore we are scum. What happens to the landy after it's been sold is not their concern. The fact that there will be loads of 'wannabe defenders' knocking about and worthless second hand cos we won't be buying em doesn't phase landrover. In reality it ought to. if your new vehicle becomes worthless the moment it leaves the showroom and becomes secondhand who would buy another one? By the time tata realise this it will be too late.

Nice idea design wise, but I don't think it would look right with the compromises you'd have to make to keep it legal and comply with modern aerodynamics.

However, if you can prove me wrong.......

Oh I'd have so much rewiring / software reconfiguration to do if I ever bought a new car now. And binning of sensors and electric motors.

Here's your Land Rover "brand value": If you point it somewhere, that's where it goes. Even if that somewhere is halfway up a mountain. Anything that doesn't help it go there shouldn't be on the vehicle.

To be honest Landrover have got nowhere to go from the defender , all they can build is a vehicle that due to EU regs will look like what they have already built eg evoque , RRS etc The only other option is to build a small truck , with 4 wheel drive , but even then the engine , will be euro 6 , another ecu laden , dpf wearing , overcomplicated headache !
Toyota have got to where they can go before them !

easiest thing is tell eu to go f**k itself and keep building proper landies, time we was out of the interfering eu

The world only has so much bubble wrap to embrace society with.. Pedestrians should be taught that roads are unfriendly, unsafe and deadly - forget all this ped safe crap...only when ALL the buses and HGVs are no longer slab fronted, ped-unfriendly vehicles then I may change my thinking.. :violent:

So LR will keep building the Defender for the UK while it develops a replacement for the rest of the (present) EU and everywhere else that's applying the same standards (i.e. most of the rest of the world) ?

Don't think that's going to happen even if we pull out today.

Dunt like it :( sorry but anything that bears the defender name and is a million miles from what we've got just wouldn't work
