Hi - plea for help please...

1999 110 TD5 station wagon. The 10A fuse in position 8 (indicators, speedo, fuel guage) blew back in May. Changed it and it has been OK, then last night it went again. Changed it and it went immediately, so clearly something isn't right.

I've checked that there isn't water in the indicators or lights, and some helpful people in this forum previously suggested it could be a grounding issue or some loose connection. The problem is I don't know where to start looking.

Used old school hand signals to get home last night, though not sure if any other road users recognised them!

Thanks

first thing is to check earth straps and clean them up. I had problems with headlight fuses blowing and after a long time found out the the front bulkhead wasn't earthed properly

This afternoon, I had a root around and earth straps look OK. With fuse 8 out (I've run out of 10A fuses!) I tried the hazards and they worked OK but worked a bit erratically. Then fuse 7 in the secondary fuse box under the driver seat went - it's 20A and supposedly controls interior light, hazards and radio. Is it worth switching out the flasher relay unit? From a bit of forum surfing, it sounds like lots of people have had indicator issues on Defenders and the flasher relay or the hazard switch itself can be the culprit.

Does anyone know which relay in the attached picture is the flasher unit?

Thanks

Stanlee, might help if you put your location on. I have a spare you can try if you're close.

Thanks Bluehaze - I'm in Stirling in central Scotland, so quite a distance from Litchfield!

I put a new flasher unit in today and tried the hazards with ignition off. Flasher clicked but no indicators flashing, then the Hazards fuse on the secondary fuse box (position 7, 20A) went.

Then I tried the indicators with ignition on and they worked for a while before the flasher stopped clicking, but strangely, fuse 8 in the primary fuse box (10A) is ok, so I still have fuel guage and speedo. Now I suspect I might have fried the brand new flasher unit.

Because there are numerous reported issues with the hazard switch itself, I have ordered a new one. We'll see. I'm scrabbling about trying stuff on a trial and error basis unfortunately.

Sounds as though the stalk is at fault.

Check the earths under the wings and at the rear - these are perpetual offenders.
