Hi

I have just started getting a funny and scary noise.

Driving along with the accelerator down a little is fine but as soon as I take my foot off and it starts engine braking I get a terrible grinding noise.

Any ideas?

Thanks
James

Thanks Sean, have booked it in with a Land Rover specialist garage - will let you know what it was!

Not in to this DIY stuff :D

Cheers
James

You were correct. The rear UJ on the prop shaft was buggered - they fitted a new one in an hour and I was back on the road :)

As for DIY - going to try and fit some new front discs this weekend...hmmm I see a new thread coming on :D

....and yes the house is in a right state :D

Cheers
James

Hey Sean,

As far as I know they just replaced the rear UJ, they charged £78 all together £40 for labour and £38 for part.

Hope that helps you,
Cheers,
James

£38 for a part that normally costs a tenner isnt bad i suppose :(
£6.50 for Hardys, that's a product markup of 800%! Coulda got a whole new propshaft and fitted it, with the labour it would have been much cheaper and better!

oi dunt be upsetting the poor chap he's just happy cos he didnt have to sell his doris to get it his landy back

Sorry James, dint mean to make you feel bad! Get some tools. The whole propshaft is only about £60 and it just bolts off and on in about 5 mins and that replaces the ujs both ends and the shaft (in case the sliding splines are worn) - or just replace the UJs for 6.50 a pop, which is slightly more technical but still relatively easy.

Did you have mecanno as a kid? It's like that only easier (and bigger and generally rustier) If something breaks, unbolt it, whack it a few times with a big hammer and bolt it back on.

Odenne,

Many thanks, yea mechano and lego were favourites of mine! :)

Will get some tools over the next few weeks and start with some minor stuff and work my way up. Just got to wait for my Haynes manual and I will be sorted.

Thanks again
Cheers

I have one, came with my 110. Fairly useful, but i would suggest asking on here if you aren't sure! As i am sure you are aware, the haynes manuals assume the car is new and not at all rusted at all anywhere, so reality can often be different.

Doh, James, am most disappointed - why are you selling up? Hopefully in order to get an even better defender?

oh dear ... that'll be when yer troubles really start ....

you might be better off downloading the relivent manuals from one of those third world download sites

Does anyone have some quick to find links to these? I have a haynes that came with my first landy, and would like something a bit more, err, practical?
