A bit of help required please.

Driving down the motorway (sacrilage I know) when I had a funny metallic grating type noise from the engine bay. I stopped for a look but couldn't see anything obvious. A short while after the same noise happenned but a bit louder and the red battery light came on.

Off the motorway and I saw some steam while at the lights so thought radiator may have sprung a leak but about 3 miles down the road something blew (no noise) and steam just erupted. Stopped and looked into the engine bay and the nozzle next to the thermostat housing was belting it out like a hyperactive kettle.

I don't know what this nozzle is. I have a Haynes in my hand but can't find a label for it. There was no huge loss of power (I limped it into work) but the steam just carried on and on.

Any ideas please gentlemen?

Belt dropped off? Don't know a lot about series but sounds like its stopped charging and overheated, only common thing being the belt:)

sounds like your water pump expired jumped the belt and you drove with not checking the temperature gauge and the steam billowing out of the pump housing probably a hose

Ok. How would I tell if it is the water pump? Would it just be impossible to turn the pulley? No hose on that nozzle. I suppose while I am ordering parts a new temperature sender might be a good investment.

Cheers

OK. So after discovering that the standard fan belt was way too long and vastly underestimating the size of the on required I managed to get the right part. Drained and flushed the radiator like a good chap and lovingly topped up with new coolant etc.

Collar friendly neighbour and get the Landrover jump started. Immediate smoke and nasty smell. Saw battery light was still on. Turned off sharpish and discover fan belt is red hot. Alternator is seized.

Got to the bottom of it eventually. Today will mainly be spent ordering parts.

Having sorted out the fan belt and that the alternator and water pump are not seized I still have a problem.

The battery light is not coming on at all (another thread has given some advice)

The other issues is that there appears to be an escape of exhaust gasses in the engine bay. When it overheated is it likely that something happenned to the manifold/gaskets or is it worse than that?
