If you reckon u can get the RRC through a MOT that make you a buyer....pmsl ( not sure my MOT tester Blind Bob will pass that)

Farmer has decided to have a clear out, caught him on a saturday with no farm work to do as too wet, he has dug his old mk 1 disco out for MOT and washed it. Has done 5 miles since last years MOT. He is muttering about selling that. ( rare 2 door with 200tdi )

Got the RRC out and has mentioned selling his late dads Classic, which has MOT and runs but is a 4.0 litre Mazda with auto box in it..

Can see i will posting lots of stuff in the for sale section shortly

I think the RRC will get an advisory on tyre wear by Blind Bob. Can you get the RRC 200Tdi lump for nowt? ;)

But get the use of the workshop and lots of help..

Will send a pic pre start tomorrow so u can see the facilities..

Not a super workshop but useful with lots of kit and not a lot of H & S nonsense.

ANd there is always Tea and coffee and biscuits......lol

Got the engine out yesterday afternoon, took all morning to get the workshop organised and cleared so i could spin the landy round on the ramp.
Rained most of the day so didn't go near the RRC donor vehicle

Good news is the chassis is in good order, however small part of bulkhead in Passenger footwell is show signs of tin worm,, reckon now might be a good time to patch or cut out and replace..Will get a pic later and post it see what the thought ison here.

Back to the title of thread one job escalates to others..

So having been stuck with no starter motor for 2 days managed to purchase one off Avenger 4 x 4 who are quite close by ( 18 miles ish)

managed to get it fitted to the RRC and witha battery on it gave her a whirl. Not been started for 10 years. Went sweet as a nut without any heat ( they are disconnected and we had to short the starter no keys etc.)

ran lovely so ripped her out this avo

The 200TDi will probably just need a bit of diesel and a decent cranking from a good battery.

Second that! Maybe change the fuel filter as a precautinary, remove the stop soloniod wire and crank until there is good oil pressure, reconnect and I would wager it will fire straight into life. Then just a good service and would be good to go.

Did as Dag019 said except for new fuel filter, and check for good oil pressure just had to hope for best as no keys etc.

Gotta love the knowledge on here..

Got a few bits to do to this engine before placing it in mine.

First job
cover it in de greaser
steam clean it
then split engine from transmission
old clutch off.

Mine is good only went in last year..hasn't done 5k miles

core plug, one weeps) probably do the lot while i am at it and a couple of hoses that look awkward to get at in a vehicle.
timing belt
rocker cover gasket
oil filter

any other suggestions would be gratefully received

Other question will my lift pump off the 2.5 N/A fit or do i need a new one. mine was new last year ?
 
Well, @Roaming Wombat was dead right :)

didnt actually need that much cranking so was dead pleased with that. Am lucky as well farm has some fair kit which saves a lot of hassle lifting stuff etc..

and a friendly advice or help and a driver to operate telehandler as pulling one out on your own with the tele-handler is a bit hit and miss, did mine sunday like that and if you have missed something it just gets broken with 5 ton bit of kit pulling and lifting...oops

Other than give it a decent service probably isn't much needed (new oils all round and coolant renewal) it'd be worth having a check of all the hoses etc, they probably didn't age well.
Maybe some easier to extra service jobs too (injectors clean) and check all your earth's and give 'em a good clean.
 
So in stripping and cleaning phase, parted my gearbox and transfer box in one go, found it easier than..

It will then slide back and drop conviniently on your chest knocking the wind out of you and can then be slid out from under the vehicle.

Block is a gold colour now i have steam cleaned all the dirt grime and grease off it.
Is this standard or is there some significance of the colour ?

Doing Front and rear coil plugs.
Front and rear crankseal
and Timing belt and tensioners

pre install.

Stuck with this gasket, what would you call it and is it standard. between engine block and flywheel housing cover

Gold is the standard block colour. I'd recommend a good read of the Glencoyne website - lots of useful conversion info. Steve Parker has all the odd bits you might need. I did the N/A to 200TDi conversion a couple of year ago - if the engine is good you won't regret it, they are perfect for an older Landy. Just ask away on here if you get stuck - and search of course.

After lots of cleaning and scraping now starting to reassemble.

Flywheel housing gasket. £7.75 plus vat from Famous Four

Lovely well made gasket, got it fitted and eased the rear crank oil seal on and the spacer plate on.

Have drilled out the flywheel casing to countersink some allen headed bolts into the block from that.

Just got flywheel and clutch to fit on the back.

Core plugs at back of block all changed.

Small one was a proper pain, got thank the farmers son for some blue sky thinking.

Put the core plug in the fridge for 30 mins cerainly helped with fitting.

Then tining belt off and the cover to change the front core plug. New timing belt and pulleys and tgen swing her in the landy.

What colour should the gearbox be..?

Have steamed cleaned that and transfer box while i had floor out and my gearbox is green.

Have already downloaded and printed the Glencoyne guide and have perused the steve parker website.

Exhaust front pipecould be a purchase from them.

Also think i mat need a new radiator as my 2.5 NA fills the front, gutted as it is only a year old.
 
Well update for all those interested.

Have managed to get rear crank seal done and flywheel and clutch refitted.
have also fitted new temp gauge ( Durite one as recommend on here thanks guys) and a Volt meter in dash

oil filter and lift pump done, rocker cover gasket and washers fitted. crankcase breather thing changed, injector pipe replaced ( Last two caused by brutal removal i think)
front core plug done and camshaft and front crank seal done and new timing belt kit fitted.

have drilled and countersunk the 4 bolts for flywheel casing to block and drilled all bell housing holes as the block studs are metric and the bell housing is imperial...they will fit but tight easy to just take a thou or 2 out..

Got sump to remove drain oil and refit as leaking where joins block, engine mounts to fit and power steering pump etc and possibly alternator pre swinging in...

However in line with the thread whilst in engine bay gave the steering a wiggle and think i may have found my steering play ( thought it might be in the PAS box) knuckles on steering shaft have loads of play......

More work...

want to get the engine in so i can work out what bits i need top fabricate and what i need to buy etc...

So have finally got the engine almost ready to go in.

just got to pop off sump and clean it out oil like sludge and was leaking on seal after i steam cleaned it, have undone all bolts and left it draining overnight.

Question i have is this

Do i have to remove the part of exhaust you see and replace with Steve Parker piece or does his fit my last pipe. (Have coated it in wd40 in case)

discovered my alternator needs a tweak as the brackets are 180 degrees out. hopefully i might know a man who can tweak the case and i have had to undo the bracket modifications to my PAS unit that we had fabricated to get it to fit on my 2.5 N/A.



At least i will be able to buy normal 200 tdi belts instead of having to find something obscure to match the length
 
So tap and threaded two out of three holes at bottom of engine..

Don't ask re the third
swung it in lined her up bolted it together..

engine mounts on, oil in plumb up / modify some diesel pipes..

left diesel stop off, pumped for ages on the lift pump, cracked and injector ppipe spun her over...

after 5 mins hooked up the diesel stop.

Gave it the beans...


SHE IS A RUNNER....!!

result so checked it revved ok etc ( timing belt replacement ) with the view if it isn't quite right easier to do without wasting loads of time re rads and stuff ( which i havent bought yet )

so just ordered Steve Parker front pipe.. but haven't altered the clutch pipe..DOH well sure i can do it with engine insitu,, not taking it out again...!! ....
i hope at least not this month..

so new radiator to be order and some steering knuckles which are knackered and then make up some water pipes etc..

Air filter guess will cobble something together..

Certainly got ok, just taken so long as been waiting on bits or been busy with life but have done lots to new engine pre install.

Still got lots of fiddling to do but feel am making progress now....
 
seems to have but given it was an unplanned job and budget is small at present so couldn't just order a bit heap of bits..and when i needed a hand re tapping bolts etc the sun shone so all farm have been busy... bloody weather never can be relied upon.

And to cap it all my mate with the grass cutting biz lost afight with an angle grinder last week.. so cobvering him work wise but getting paid...

have order new disco rad today and my steering joints and a rear exhaust pipe have a front pipe and a 300 tdi mid section so hopefully that should be ok..


lots wont be here so could have a bank holiday weekend not under it.

Right after a day cutting grass for a living i am now off to earn a pound or two counting election votes...

got a200tdi conversion to pay for....lol
 
so after a manic spell of work and stuff and other important jobs..

Have finally got brave and attacked the radiator brackets and the clutch pipe bracket with the angle grinder. ( wished i had done the clutch pipe pre engine in )

So Steve Parker pipe fitted and as per glencoyne engineering guide am going to use 300 tdi center and rear pipe for exhaust.

Am proper stuck with where the tail pipe goes as it is a bloody odd bit of exhaust and after lots of swearing i havent got a clue..

Help please anyone with a 300 tdi in a defender some pics would really be appreciated..
