Head Gasket,
Had a slight suspicion it might need doing and timing is good right now.
Slight loss of water, but blue smoke on start up ( Valve stem oil seals i thought)
Water have since found as weep on rubber hose.

If left idling it would start to smoke after a few mins.

Settled on it today when with it running took oil filler cap off, was breathing out there, when revved in puffed harder, on idle it was in time with engine.
So thought compression to exhaust as it doesn't get hot at all.

So gonna strip and clean head check valve seats and guides while i am out it and lap the valves back in got a couple that are not right.
Gasket was blown in a couple of places but only minor.

Head pic to follow

Here we go pic of the head
Inlet on 3 & $ def look a bit off..

Clean and strip tomorrow i guess.

Good news is the bores look good..lol

My heart goes out to you mate!!
And it's making me physically sick as me V8 needs the same treatment !!
But I think my heads need skimmed!! Cooked it a few times :(
Good look on your rebuild

Head came off in under 2 hours start to finish including a coffee break, and had to take the front wheels off about a quarter of the way through.

She had got her winter boots on makes her quite talland even though i am over 6ft it was a pain to get at manifold bolts.
Lucky i was on the ramp and just slid tyhe air jack thing forward, and then gave it the treatment with the milwalkee battery gun.

Didn't hurry just 2.5 NA means there is less to take off...lol got to be some bonuses.

Clean it up and doing the head is the bit that takes the time i find..

Will pop some more pics up when i get the head stripped.

so got the head stripped at lunchtime

Think it needs a slight skim and new valve guides.

So off to machinery shop this avo.

Well that's has torn it

only took it a part as precautionary measure though £30 worth of gasket set would be it. Peace of mind and all that.

Engine machinery place spotted this and cleaned the head a bit.

Guess that would be broken with a capital F....

What to do now.....

Try to find a second hand Head for it or time to engine swap for 200tdi or 300 tdi... is a TD5 doable or too much trouble.
Have access to a 200TDi lump but it has been stood in a retired vehicle in a barn for 10 years.. will that be any good or fraught with problems ??

A mate has already suggested a Cummins, but i am not as dedicated as Aaron..

Decisions decisons...

You've taken the wrong bits off to fit the rear light cluster there, mate! :p

The 200TDi will probably just need a bit of diesel and a decent cranking from a good battery.

Second that! Maybe change the fuel filter as a precautinary, remove the stop soloniod wire and crank until there is good oil pressure, reconnect and I would wager it will fire straight into life. Then just a good service and would be good to go.

That's a PITA :(
I'd be tempted by the 200 anorl.
Sorry about my light hearted post earlier, feel like a right @rse now

No worries Al203.. it made me smile..!!

So donor vehicle extracted from the back of the barn

Needs a starter motor, went to borrow one of a mate and he has sent me home with his spare 200tdi engine...

So got a choice..
not sure the donor engine will go but worth trying it i think....

Cheers, mate. It was meant to make you smile. :) Owing to having a few beers on board, I hadn't seen the post with the cracked cylinder head!

Anyway, have you taken the 200Tdi out of the RRC or is it still in there?

Guessed as much when i looked at the time.

Not out of the RRC yet, gonna stick the starter off my mates engine on it and giver her a whirl to see if she goes. If not then will be my mates spare engine and the n pull the engine n box out of classic for a spare.

Might try the remains of the RRclassic on here for sale after that if there is any interest.

That sounds good. Hopefully, the dash still lights up when you stick a battery on it and you can see if the oil pressure light goes out when you crank it over.

Probably pass an MOT that.:D

So Cavey_P38, are you saying your one little job has escalated into you acquiring 2 200TDI engines? for nowt more than a cheeky wink? I'd say your cracked cylinder is turning out alreyt!

I'll say, worth a lot of money two 200Tdi engines.

Not quite...

if i have my mates engine will have to part with some cash, but hopefully not what they are making on fleabay.

If you reckon u can get the RRC through a MOT that make you a buyer....pmsl ( not sure my MOT tester Blind Bob will pass that)

Farmer has decided to have a clear out, caught him on a saturday with no farm work to do as too wet, he has dug his old mk 1 disco out for MOT and washed it. Has done 5 miles since last years MOT. He is muttering about selling that. ( rare 2 door with 200tdi )

Got the RRC out and has mentioned selling his late dads Classic, which has MOT and runs but is a 4.0 litre Mazda with auto box in it..

Can see i will posting lots of stuff in the for sale section shortly

Could be a busy Sunday.
