hi all

smelt diesle again today but this time from the rear of the car

had a quick look under it and the tank cradle is very damp with fuel :-(

not sure if tank leaking or maybe a pipe thats running fuel down the tank and to the cradle ,and ideas ? is this a common fault

also my cradle looks rusty as hell ! which after reading seems a common fault?

if i remove cradle for repair/welding new plates into it will the fuel tank hold up or will it fall from the car?
if so maybe a axle stand with a piece of wood on it to surport the weight?

You will need to support the fool tank if you remove the cradle.

Fold up the rear seats and fold up the carpet at the join under the seats. You'll see a circular panel about 9 inches diameter. Undo the screws and lift the plate and you'll be able to see the top of the fool tank. Check for leaks there.

cheers mate

i will try that asap :) hopefully its just a pipe or something leaking and not the actual tank

are they metal tanks or plastic?

and will get some 1mm or so sheet metal to try and refab the rotten part of the cradle

If the seal in the top isn't fitted correctly then the pump will pop up. It turns to lock on. If the seal was damaged when fitting the pump then it can leak if you fill it full of fool.

cool

if it does turn out to be the gasket esp as thinking about it its only happened twice since ive had the car and both times it is when ive had the tank full

can i make my own gasket ie gasket paper or silicone or is it some kind of spec gasket that will cost stupid amounts of ££££££

cheers

no they are rubber gaskets it is more than likely to be that as you only get it on fully fuelling up before you try to remover the big ring that hold's everything in remove the pipes, they are a squeeze connector just squeeze and pull but be care full some people have snapped them, once they are off it is like opening a big screw on lid of a jar you will probably have to use a hammer and a bar of some sorts like a screw driver or better still a piece of wood , now when you put it all back make sure the top of the pump ect: is positioned right ,or you will not get the screw top back on, it may be some body has had it off before and not put it back right. hope this helps

thanks for the replies

as for remaking the cradle ,i will get 2mm plate then ,i have the means to cut ,bend the plate ,weld the new plate in

but i dont ahave a machine to put swages in it , looks very easy to make a diy one (from vids on you tube ,but i dont have any dies :-( )

im sure it will be stronge enough ?

Maybe put a strip up the under side of each plate, one each side of the tube, the full length of each plate, a 10mm stitch weld every couple of inches should be sufficient. Will add some much needed strength

got my 2mm thick steel today to try and remake the panels in my fuel cradle

before i take the cradle off does anyone have a template or the dimensions of the required plate ?
so while making the plates i can still use car
cheers

well pulled the carpet back as some one said to find the inspection hatch

once opened quick look and to be honest seems ok ,a bit damp but dont think this is where the leak is from

anyway next was to have a look at this rotten cradle :violent:

and to be honest its to far gone to even be able to copy a template from it :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

can some one please please please take some measurements from theres and post a template of them :tea:
someone must have one sat in a shed somewhere so they can measure it

once ive made mine im def going to post a template with measurments on it and try to get it as a sticky
