My fuel pump isn't shutting off once the system has pressurised.
It's a Rover 3.5 V8 twin carb lump in a Hilux MK3.
I have flushed the tank, installed new fuel pickup pipes, new jubilee clips on all hose connections, new in-line fuel filter / pressure regulator / T for pressure gauge, serviced the carbs.
I have tried clamping the fuel inlet hose before the carbs and the pump slows down but doesn't stop.
The pump is a facet that I got from a mate. He said it was a decent one but I can't be sure..
Fuel pump fault..? Any way to check without getting another one?
Any other suggestions??

Facet are excellent pumps………

As to why you want it to shut off while running well **** knows………….it's the damn fuel pump  it pumps fuel to the carbs which in turn push it into the engine. So you tell me how the **** an engines meant to work without a supply of fuel ?

Go on……..I dares ya!

Cheers for the input....

Guess I should have mentioned that the engine is off but the ignition is on..

Looked into it further and I think the pump is wired up wrong. It is just wired direct to a feed that's live when the ignition is turned on.
I read that the pump should be wired via the oil pressure switch. The pump would be activated by the starter when the ignition is turned and then switch to run constantly when the oil pressure rises.

Is this correct..?

should pump to tank return, failing that in the bad old days we used filter king, if you do not have a tank return and can't limit pressure you will flood it or run rich as float needles forced open

Cheers fanatic.

Yea it has a return and i've just fitted a regulator.
I was going on my knowledge of bikes as my bike fuel pump made the same sound when the main tank ran low but it didn't have a return. When the ignition was turned on the pump would prime the system and and shut off when the pressure was built up.
Obviously the V8 system is different as my lack of knowledge shows...

Realised it's the wiring that's wrong with it.
Do you know if it should be wired to the oil pressure switch?

it should just run all the time with ign on and uses whats needed and return rest to the tank, up to and including all the fuel with the engine off. mine does

yeah thats right it is noisy. it just has a 12v live to it from the igntion key postion 2 and 3 and is earthed to the body. the pump just pumps and what is used which obviously when the engine is off is everything is returned to the tank via the spill return after the carbs. it sounds like your fine, if the carbs arnt flooding and fuel isnt peeing out somewhere all is well.

the pump for twin srtomberg and su installs is supposed to run at 2-3 psi which is the cheapest pump anyway. bearmach did mine and it was £25
