Mine's a 1988 and I lifted the boot floor by knocking the heads off the rivets. Couldn't drop the tank because the tow bar stays are in the way and there is no way the tow bar assembly would come off.

Good point Pete. I forgot about the tow bar assembly. I ground off the nuts/bolts holding the towbar on and got it out of the way. They're easy to reach and not many of them. Got some new ones and that was another good job done.

No. Mine's '89 with no hatch.

Don't know what all the fuss is about over dropping the fuel tank anyway. Surely four bolts and a few jubilee clips is easier than making hatches and cutting through floors?!?

I confess to being embarrassed now, after all the advice received. Thinking to check out the fuel pump operation (or not) & knowing that the unit only runs when the starter is cranking I got a neighbour to turn the lump over whilst I listened in the back. I didn't get a chance to form an opinion as the engine fired up at the first turn!! Why it wouldn't do so last Friday I've no idea as any theories regarding dampness don't gel with the all the heavy rain we've had since then - anyway a great many thanks to all of you for the responses - hopefully someone will have gained from the thread, even me if it happens again!
