Hi guys
After owning four RRC's I've experienced my first non-start today. Like most of us I've had my share of DOK's (either battery or starter faults) but never had a RR spin over but not make any attempt to fire, in any weather. Should it prove to be a defunct fuel pump the though of asking my 'indie to drop the tank (after 26years) is scary, so can anyone give me the precise measurements required for cutting a hole in the boot floor to gain access to the pump. This subject has probably been covered before but 'searching' the forum has proved unsuccessful. Thanks in advance guys.

If it is an earlier RRC then the floor panel is only held in with rivets. It would be easier to just drill the rivets out and remove the floor panel wouldn't it?

It's an '87 & to be honest Kev despite having the floor coverings up every 12 to 18 months to check for corrosion & treatment if required, I've never noticed how the floor is secured. Something to think about certainly but I doubt I'd be that lucky :(
 
will be riveted. the seat belt anchors bolts can be a bit of a pain,get some penetrating fluid on them.

doesn't it help with location of pump?

I'm still hoping it isn't the pump itself, the car's only done 49k but then it is a LR :rolleyes:
 
Not really as if I do have to gain access knowing exactly where to cut blind makes measurements crucial.


no it dont..get hold of another floor..dirt cheap 2nd hand.you only need a square foot or so...use lovely pic of tank in this thread to guess where pump is and cut away..you wont be that far out..
use 2nd hand floor to cover hole you cut...(overlapping your floor,self tapping screws and silicon gunge to secure and wether proof.

dont see a problem here..its not like you gonna get away with using your old floor you cut out unless you gonna weld it back in??and that would be very silly if you did..!
 
Its an ally floor pre 90 so just be aware you cant just tack weld it back on as easily! Id take the floor out as a whole section as suggested. But have you checked the earth on the pump first? If possible to do that, could be your issue?
 
Thanks for all the replies guys, they've given me plenty of food for thought. The problem only became apparent on Friday morning & as (a)the car is not a daily driver & (b)it's persistently raining, I'll look at it tomorrow. First up I'll listen for the fuel-pump as someone else turns the key - if no sound I've got a known good relay I can try. It might be a coincidence but the fuel pump has been slightly noisy (only audible at idle) ever since I've had the car but the old girl has never missed a beat, even at high speed when I would have thought the pump was working it's hardest.
 
NO DONT..do not remove whole floor..no no no

it will be corroded where rivets go..YOU will find lots of corrosion hidding under it.

so unless you want to start rebuilding chassis,floor pans OR want to live knowing that the rr is rotten its best just to cut a hole above the pump..what you dont know dont hurt!

Thanks Zen - sounds like good advice, the car has always been Waxoyld but you never know where the stuff hasn't reached. I'm going to listen for the pump (when it stops bloody raining) & if it's no go then 'phone my 'indie.
 
My Rangey let me down last night too, 50 miles from home (horrendous night too) with my pregnant wife and 1 year old son in the car with me! Wouldn't start for love nor money. First time ever I called the AA, very knowledgeable guy turned up and told me electrics were damp and I'd flooded it. He got it going and we checked under the dizzy cap to find it a bit damp. So I've ordered replacements for plugs, leads, cap and rotor.

I was convincing myself after this thread that my fuel pump had gone too! Lucky for me we got it going again.

Unlucky for me, my wife has made up her mind that the Rangey is going before April next year when #2 is due. So I think I have 4 months of V8 ownership left :(:(:(:(:(:(:(

Good luck with that fuel pump, don't listen to me I can't diagnose a flooded engine :eek:

No. Mine's '89 with no hatch.

Don't know what all the fuss is about over dropping the fuel tank anyway. Surely four bolts and a few jubilee clips is easier than making hatches and cutting through floors?!?

Renew the jubilee clips and give the tank a lick of paint while it's off, make a proper job of it. That's what I did anyway...

Mine's a 1988 and I lifted the boot floor by knocking the heads off the rivets. Couldn't drop the tank because the tow bar stays are in the way and there is no way the tow bar assembly would come off.
