Been trying to swap the fuel filter on my 2004 FL1.

Did everything up until refitting it.

I cannot for the life of me get it back in and get the locking ring back on. I have been pushing absolutely as hard as I dare but I don't want to break anything.

Everything looks to be reassembled correctly. Sender gauge looks fine.

I've got the sealing ring the correct way around, marked out the points.

Is there a way to get the fuel pump back in so it is flush already before applying the locking ring? At the moment it sits proud of the top by a few mm so I have to push the pump down, whilst trying to locate the locking ring and then turning. I have a couple of times got it to engage a bit cross threaded but then it pops off. Am I doing something wrong?

And what in the name of greek buggery is that plastic pipe running across the top of the pump? That little fecker is completely in the way.
 
Does the locking ring just spin around as if its tryin to lock? When i was messing with mine to fix the fuel gage. I would push the hoses aside because the lock ring would snag on the lock ring. I would then make sure the lock position of the fuel pump was good with the tank positioning. Then push down on the fuel pump and turn it easily. It does get cross threated but i just used some muscle to get her in. Maybe somegood ol spit to lubercate te ring wouldnt hurt eighter ��
 
Put a smear of engine oil around the pump seal. This helps when you push the pump into the tank. Put some oil on the locking ring seal too. This helps it turn. Then turn the locking ring by hand to engage the thread. It's important to hold the pump firmly into the tank while the ring is being tightened.

What colour were the pump motor connections. Mine were showing signs of overheating.

Ta. Am I right in thinking that before the locking ring, the pump doesn't sit flush down in the hole? Ie the rubber washer makes it sit up and it's the locking ring that forces it down and in?

I can turn the ring easily but it's fekking hard to get it to engage.
 
It's a bit of a fiddle. The pump has to be low enough for the thread to engage. The location tab needs to be in the correct place to.

I've got the tab in the right place. So it is a case of pushing the pump down whilst simultaneously trying to engage the locking ring?

Based on your other thread, i checked them out. They all looked nice and clean.

I did however found a few green looking connections in the fuse box in the engine. I'm wondering if this may be the cause of my other issue to do with the electrical crack. But that's for another thread.
 
I just use my hands to tighten the ring down. I get it really tight thoo. You can hand tighten then use screw driver and hammer just in case.
