Im need to replace the diesel lines on my 300tdi defender as the plastic ones have rubbed on the chassis in a few places.

Has any one used rubber? I am wondering if the lift pump can still pull through diesel the rubber lines as theres less resistance with the plastic type.

Rubber WILL perish sooner or later causing much fun with air/fuel leaks, plastic will last literally the life of the car.
You want hgv air brake pipe, Ive used it on my series and the 90 with no issues.
Its available in different ID and OD so be careful how you measure

I used copper, micro bore central heating pipe because I had a reel.
It works fine and the car does feel warmer

The good stuff - braided - isn't too dear. I sourced mine from Magill Motorsport.

yes the stainless braided for extra protection!

how have you made the ends off? barb fitting and hose clamp or AN fittings?

Barb fitting and hose clamp, tidied up the ends of the braid with tape. Easy peasy.

Nylon air line , 10mm od for flow and 8mm od for return.
Use brass compression fittings to splice in where necessary.
Did mine in clear around 10yrs ago.
