Fuel lift pump removal / renewal

It's quite an easy job to do, so here's how Ah did mine.....

The pump on the engine..

Stuck a 17mm spanner on the bit where the 'in' pipe goes just so's ah didn't do any damage tae the pump....

then usin' a 13mm spanner ah cracked the 'in' pipe and removed it from the pump.....

Next thing ah did was to remove the pipe from the filter housin' (only because the last time ah did it the pipe got jammed and twisted when takin' it off the pump!) usin' a 19mm spanner..

... then removed the 'out pipe from the pump same way as ah did the 'in' pipe.

Usin' a 1/4" drive ratchet, extention bar and a bit holder with an Allen bit ah took of the first Allen bolt on the side of the pump...

then usin' same again minus the extension bar ah took off the other Allen bolt on the other side of the pump and took the pump off to see this...

A piccy of the 'old' pump removed..

and a piccy of the new pump...

Next a put some sealant on the pump..

...and stuck the gasket on it..

Then ah cleaned the area where the pump fits back onto and bolted the pump back in place...

.. and fitted the 'in' pipe first usin' the 17mm and 13mm spanners again...

fuelliftpumprenewal015.jpg

next ah started to hand prime the pump to get the fuel through... gave up and fired the engine for a second ensurin' the lift pump was workin' on the cam....

reconnected the 'out' pipe on the pump..

...and then usin' two new copper washers, fitted the pipe back onto the filter housin'..

Then ah undid the bleed screw on top of the filter housin' and hand pumped the fuel through until it came out of the bleed screw and retightened it...

That's it, job done;) :D

This is just a piccy of the tools that ah used..

Like ah said, it is quite an easy job to do;) :D

Hi just wanted to thank you for this post. It made me change my mind and have a go myself. £15 for the lift pump and a few very satisfactory hours. Job done - very many thanks again.

good info mate but im quite green to mechanics how did you manually pump fuel thru ?

Cheers Will;) If ye mean when it was all back together.. Ah just slackened off the bleed screw on the filter housing and then pumped the lever on the side of the pump until no more bubbles came out of bleed screw;)

Lever will only work if pump arm is off cam. In other words cam is not lifting pump arm. If lever does not work flick engine over to move pump off cam until it pumps.
