BIG AL71

Hiya folks, just joined and already after some help and advice. My disco 2 td5 started pouring oil type substance from just infront of front axle, took it to local landy guy. Diesel in sump, needs new piston rings and investigation has to why and where its leaking from. Any ideas would be most welcome. Thanks folks

If you're lucky its just leaking injector O rings or if you're not its a cracked fuel gallery in the cylinder head. Common issue on early 10p engines.

never had much luck me,hoping thats about to change?? so do"es the Bank Manager (the Wife). hope its just the O rings plz.

Fuel in the engine oil eventually cost me a new engine. Top half was completely shagged but crank bearings and big ends were just fine ?????
Oil pump was also good and is now fitted to a TD5 out in Tanzania. Still going strong after 10,000km of bush use.

its the later heads that suffer from the cracked injector linings as land rover in their wisdom made them thinner. if you take out the injectors check the stems for wasting as they tend to do this and it means an new set of injectors unfortunatly

i thought the newer engines were meant to have fixed all the problems?? Which engine has the thinner injector linings. Is this correct Shifty??

The later heads removed the internal fuel return gallery and supposedly fixed the fuel leaking into the oil problem. However a leaking O ring can give the same symptoms of elevated oil levels. I've heard it said that if you can get a Spanish made TD5 head it is by far the strongest as it has thicker ribs cast into it. I believe that Turners only supply these type of heads.

Yup, posted about this issue before. Had the Turners head on for 6k miles now and no issues with diesel in fuel. Get it sorted quick, as the turbo likes to use the nice mix to run away with itself....

Speak to Frida at Turners - she is really clued-up on Landys!

well a wee update for you,Took it to my local Landy guy,new seals on injecters still leaking week later try again with new seals still no different, took nearly 20lts out of sump in less than a week or 100miles. Looks like i need to head down the expensive New Cylinder Head route,oo well. HAPPY CHRISTMAS.

I have experienced same symptoms and have had the engine/turbo runaway although managed to stop the engine sharpish. Can anybody explain as per Pommy Pekkie's comments, where the turbo is getting the fuel from - is it unburnt fuel/oil from the oil breather, or has an oil seal gone on the turbo due to poor lubrication from the diluted oil?

Elevated engine oil levels cause oil/vapour to blow out of the breather into the inlet tract and also the diluted engine oil can bypass the rings and directly enter the cylinders.
The diluted oil is also not good at maintaining a decent turbo bearing film so the turbo shaft can vibrate or rattle allowing high pressure engine oil-fuel mix to leak from the turbo shaft oil seals into the engine air inlet and sometimes into the exhaust manifold. Often the first signs of imminent disaster are a smoky exhaust especially when the turbo spins up under throttle.

Thanks Shifty, all makes sense. One more question for now, you make reference to later cylinder heads having been redeisgned so the fuel return galleries are less susceptible to cracking; do you know from which engine number this "improved design" applies? - my engine number is in the 15P series.

If you have a fuel return pipe running from the front of the cylinder head underneath the inlet manifold back to the fuel regulator bolted to the rear of the head on the drivers side you have the later type head. If you dont then you have the earlier type head. It was the drilling for the internal fuel return gallery that caused the weaknesses in the early heads.

I believe that the UK and EU 15p engines onwards had the newer heads fitted but have heard that some export engines were fitted with the older heads to use them up. The only way to tell is to look for that return pipe. I've yet to see a pre 2000 TD5 fitted with the later heads as standard.

Howdy

My 2002 Defender had the new head, and it still went t*ts-up at 100k. I've had the Turners head in for 6k now - Landrover didn't have new heads when mine broke, and could only offer me a recon one...

As far as I know Landrover dont manufacture TD5 heads any more. There is a Spanish company making so called "improved" TD5 heads which I think is what Turners use. I could also be talking complete rubbish as I've only heard this second or third hand.

What actually went wrong with your head?

Cracks on the head around injectors 2, 3 & 4. That's why I went for the new head instead of the recon.

Hi just got a similar problem on a 2005 Defender TD5.
Loads of diesel in oil and caused engine runaway. Local garage changed the injector seals, but it looks as though still leaking.
2 questions if anyone can help please.
1) Is the 2005 TD5 considered a late engine? - i.e some of the head problems resolved.
2) Could this be caused by the fuel pressure regulator as that was changed by main dealer a couple of months ago ?

2) Could this be caused by the fuel pressure regulator as that was changed by main dealer a couple of months ago ? NO. Leaking FPR's can cause missfires/loss of power etc but won't put fuel into the sump.

Answers in red.

Was the local garage a landy specialist or just a normal garage? TD5 injector washers and O rings have to be seated absolutely spot on.

No he's not a landy specialist but Ive used him for all our cars for several years and trust him.
I ask about the fuel regulator because it had a new one fitted by Hunters the main dealer 4 months ago, if theres any way that diesel could be leaking into the oil through the regulator it'll go straight back to Hunters of course.
If head has cracks - are they obvious? Can they be seen before taking the head off> Or does it take a professional inspection

nothing obvious except for elavated oil levels and smokyness.

really is a lottery this TD5 engine. hen mines goes i'm fitting a tdv6!
