After fitting the early filter into my 2001 V6, I would advise getting a correct filter. I had to fabricate a different seal arrangement which took time. The filters aren't the same dimensions nor are the fuel inlets or outlets. The later pump will work with the early filter but only after messing with seals. When I change my next filter, I'll get the correct but more expensive version.
The earlier filter is for the early 1.8 only pump. The V6 came out after this pump was superseded.

I chose WFL000010 because I have not had more information about each size.

So the filter arrived today... first cleaned out the inlet fuel pump filter which was a bit caked :
The old filter was a VDO 10 007 003 which 'seems' to be the WFL100160 according to this.
Not sure if the filter was still the original one that came with the pump/car? The dimensions appeared the same as the WFL100160 I ordered.
However, the plastic fitting seemed different (not shown). It may well have worked fine but to prevent any issues I decided to rip out the plastic fitting from the old filter and put it in the new one. Needed some 'gentle' tapping to fit in which was straight-forward and quick.
Putting the filter in was no drama but re-fitting the fuel level sensor was difficult. The new filter didn't quite sit in right and buldged out a holder clip and a plastic bit, but was otherwise in there securely.
I wasn't sure if this was causing it to be difficult to get the sensor back on (or if its just a tricky job).
So I shaved a bit of plastic that seemed to stick out and may have upset the sensor fitting.
After a little swearing it all fit in.
I don't have the ability to measure the fuel pressure but the car runs :high5:
So in summary, this WFL100160 does seem to fit the Freelander V6 2.5 (2001) noting that the fuel pump was a WFX000070 (since super-seeded by the WFX000190(G) or others) and I don't know if it will work for the newer pumps. The fuel pump model can be easily checked after taking off the fuel lid behind the rear passenger seat.
FYI - this was the inside of old filter but after a lot of backwashing in which a lot of solid crud came out:
Previous to this the car had problems starting, but this may have also been due to fuel leakage from an o-ring at the front fuel rail connection to the pipe leading to the rear fuel rail which was fixed by replacing the o-ring.

The filter that I'd picked up didn't work with the old plastic bit. This is why I had to fabricate a new seal. I also had the issue with the filter not quite fitting the pump. I don't cut anything to make the fit better, I just "made" it fit.
Looking at the filter I removed, I suspect it was the original.
My symptoms were cutting out and loss of power. Once the new filter was fitted, the pump ran with a lower note and power was restored. The cutting out, I'm contributing to the pump overheating due to lack of fuel flow.
