My 300 TDI has the fuel filter attached to the chassis just in front of the tank, then the fuel goes to the lift pump.

Everything I read says it should go to the pump, then the filter, then the engine, but i don't know how important that is.

Is this something I should worry about or not?

As James said,if it is disco 1,it goes ,tank, sedementer, lift pump, then filter (cannister on bulkhead),then injection pump

had another look - the engine and some systems have come from a disco 1 and are now sitting in my 1983 One Ten, so it could have been something installed straight from the disco.

But it is a filter, I'm pretty sure.

I might buy a sedementer as it's VERY dusty out here, and it gets everywhere.

BUT should I move the filter so it sits AFTER the fuel lift pump or is it simply not an issue?

Yup your pic is a filter-strange location.I would have the filter after lift pump and before injection pump,to protect injection pump-that way only filtered fuel goes to Injection pump via fuel hose,if lift pump should fail or break up filter will catch bits
