Hello there, I'm hoping someone can offer me advice on this one. I bought my TD4 (2001) 4 weeks ago, it's the first diesel I've owned so I'm not used to their behavior! Last night I stopped at the shops on my way home and when I returned to my car it didn't start! Turned the key and nothing, until the 4th attempt when it went. This morning, pretty much the same story really. I tried to start it 7 or 8 times and all it did was hum at me! After a while it started like normal. On arriving at work (15 minutes later) i turned the engine off and immediately tried it again - guess what .......... nothing, just humming! Grrrrrr! Any ideas??

I know nothing about td4 but most diesels have heater plugs to help starting.You may need to wait for a light to go out or suchlike before starting.A new fuel filter is always good.
It might be an idea to Introduce yourself b4 asking advice.:welcome2:Be prepared for some stick,although you may get off lightly as yoo is a girl

when you say humming, was it like a chattering sound from the front of the vehicle, or just a very quiet hum from the back of the vehicle (fuel pump) ?

Thanks for your reply, sorry I didn't introduce myself! I was in a bit of a flap and am dreading being stuck at work! (Being stuck at home I could cope with!) The light for the glow plugs is going out before I try to start her, but it might be worth changing the fuel filter? May have to rely on the good old RAC come going home time! Thanks for your reply, the glow plug light seems to go out almost instantly, but in the cold the battery light stays on?? Goodness I'm very confused (dare I say my MG was simpler - went wrong very often, but a simple beast!)

Thanks too, I think the humming I can hear is the fuel pump - It's a constant low continuous sound!

There are similar problems diagnosed on the Freelander section of the website.

You may have a dodgy ignition switch, which will be a relatively straightforward fix.

I'm with you on this Blippie.

If it is a dodgy ignition switch, a live feed direct to the starter motor will generally get the vehicle started in order for her to get home under her own steam. It tends to be the 'crank' position on the switch that goes down first.
