Afternoon,

Horrible noise from the front wheel and when checked the bearing is shot so, got the new one, took the free hub off, nice and easy so far, then I am about to take the large lock nut off, yes I bent back the locking washer, but it will not budge, using a cheapy spanner as due to the axel sticking out I can not get a socket on it and used a bar through it, pushed till the bar bent.

What am I missing? Surely a lock nut can not be that tight and it has been sat in oil so I am at a loss.

Any ideas?
 
Might just be tight - silly question, you are turning it anticlockwise? they aren't handed. The get-out-of -jail method is to take a sharp cold chisel, place it on the corner of the nut at an angle and hit it with a big hammer. It might bugger the locknut but it should shock it off.
 
They can get tight,bearing may have heated it up as it gave up.Split it like oxides say's.
 
I wasn't suggesting splitting it, just knocking it off with a hammer and chisel! Hit the corner at a tangent and it will come off. I did this for years before I got round to buying the correct box spanner...
 
Thanks for suggestions, I feel a chisel and hammer lesson coming. May also order a new lock but and box socket for when I arse this up.
 
As suggested already there is a special box spanner for this job. They're not expensive. It gives even torque all round the nut. Can't remember the torque setting but its odd it's so tight.
