Hi all,
On checking wheels for any play pre mot found the driver's front to have a lot of play , took the pads out so I could rotate and listen for any rumblings sounded ok so was hoping I cud adjust the lock nuts . On strip down didn't find what I was expecting to find I.e. two locking nuts instead they was just a large thrust washer which was held on with one locking nut with like a spigot on it ? Has the previous owner put the wrong type of bearing on as the owners manual suggests a two longing nut system with a locking washer in between. As its a 90 300 tdi . I'm thinking of getting the relevant locking nuts & washer and going from there or ordering a complete bearing kit for my vehicle . Any thoughts would be gradually appreciated cheers in advance

What sort of spigot?
Yours should have the lock nut system as the 300Tdi bearings have to have the load on the bearing set using the specified torque, turning the nut back then back to different torque and then locked in position with the locking nut, which is then held in place by bending over the fold washer. Later axles don't have this system and you torque down the nut and then tap a flat/fold on the extended 'collar' on the nut, as an antivibration system.
Might someone have put newer axles on your Landy?

Possibly would have to check other side , or check axle , I guess checking the axle is the original wud be done by cross ref axle number?

I don't know.
However, if you tighten the first nut up on the 300tdi too much (doesn't take much) you will stop the wheel turning. Easy to check! On a later axle the wheel will keep turning even when it's FOT.

Is FOT a technical term?

Update after inspecting the other side it appears it's a later axle requiring the stake nut . Fitted the nut no play happy days and thanks to the advice input guys cheers

Just a thought for in the future if it's a different axle and I need to replace a wheel bearing are the bearings different?
