At the moment for a front towing hitch all I have is a medium sized shackle through a bit on the chassis. Its hard to describe what i mean but its on the inside of the offside chassis leg, only a few inches back. there is an identical bit on the nearside but it is what the steering damper is attached too.

however this doesnt seem very heavy duty so im looking to get a better one. cant afford a winch or winch bumper at the moment but i understand that steering guards have towing eyes on em would this be a good way to go?

mount a shackle or towing eye to the middle of yer bumper, with a lump of steel behind it for reinforcement. that'll be fine for all normal purposes.

the sodbury sort out big Landrover autojumble. Jate ring are a bit like shackles ya buy 2 and they attach to the chassis legs just behind the front bumper Rebel 4x4

sorry im a bit confused do u put the jate rings through the bit i currently have a shackle through on my 90? also im sure its fine but the bolt through the jate rings in those pics looks a bit weedy??!

fink i know wat u mean, one on each leg and i got a steering damper attached 2 one and shackle through the other...but shackle isnt very strong....

Yes the bit you have is probably a lashing eye 4 or 5mm thick shaped like a pear with a small hole for the bolt and a big hole for attaching a rope. You get rid of that and replace it with the bolt for the jate ring. And dunt worry about the bolt. You need an incredible amount of force to shear an 8mm thick hi tensile bolt. Hundreds if not thousnads of people use jate rings for offroad recovery and very few of em fail and when they do it's usually a snatch recovery gone wrong that snaps em.

you'll find the steering damper attaches to a different hole.

can you post a pic of your "shackle" it sounds like a jate ring. some of them look like a shackle. I've got a pair on the back of the disco like that.

and also it does have a rear towbar but still has two pear shaped lashing eyes....... ive only owned it since feb and it came to me exactly as im describing it to you. altho i have replaced the rear crossmember but i replaced the towbar and lashing eys wen i did this.

Dunt use the lashing eyes fer towing with or pulling out of the mud. Does yer towbar have a pair of arms going back to the same holes as the lashing eyes. If there is ya don't need any additional towpoints but if it hasn't it might be worth getting a pair of jate rings for offroad recovery. The good thing about jate rings is because there so low down when your been pulled out of the mud it drags yer back end up out of the mud

yeh the towbar is a heavy duty jobby with arms goin back to the chassis, as well as a plate comin off the crossmember so i think its tough enough for the job!
