Just for shunting horseboxes and boats around, can I mount a front tow hitch to my front bumper? Legally and structurally? I know I can get a proper one that mounts to the chassis and sticks out from under the bumper on a removable mount, but they are a £200+. Surely the front bumper is solid enough? If it's illegal, I could always just drill the holes and mount it when I need it.

What are your thoughts?

tnx

Nik

Not legal I don't think and don't forget you have the SRS crash cans in the bumber rails too.....

Had one on a disco i bought for breaking never used it, and i was surprised he claimed it passed a MOT like that as does seem abit bad for anything/one you hit. The bumper looked like it could take it, guess shunting would be less strain than pulling ?

No, the bumper on the P38 couldn't take it. If you replaced it with a winch bumper that removes the crush cans, then no drama. Standard setup, it'll just tear off the front of your P38.

You'll be better spending the money for the front mounted 2" receiver.

[edit: Or you could get a bar similar to this to shunt around stuff using the tow eye. Not sure how easy it'd be though.]

Ok, thanks for the advice. I've just found a Watling one for £140 for the complete kit which isn't bad.

BTW, what are "crush cans"? I know I could probably google it before any one answers - but just curious :)

tnx all

Nik

They are part of the crash structure of the vehicle. They will dissipate the force of an impact by sacrificing themselves. Low speed impacts they can be the only part that gets damaged.
