I know that the service spec. changed from oil to grease, but which is actually best as regards lubrication, oil or grease?

I would guess that if topped up and changed regularly then oil but the seals will have to be kept in top condition. The grease is found in most modern CV joints so it cant be bad.

Used grease when i replaced both swival balls as it came in the kit.
But reckon oil would be able to seep out quicker.

I'd want a good reason for going against the most up-to-date lubrication recommendation from a vehicle manufacturer.

Early swivels (Discovery 1)need hypoid oil to lubricate the upper bush. I tend to use both, i.e. top up with hypoid oil.
However, CV joints must be packed with grease.

one shot grease was brought out due to constant leaks from swivels.
good for the cv, however the wheel bearing lube should be swivel oil that flows up the stub shaft and into the hub assembly.
i use oil for this reason as its thinner and get to the bearings.
also splash lubes the top swivel as it was designed to do.
