Had MOT on my V8 yesterday, and apart from 2 bulbs not being right and a bit of loose brake pipe, it passed with flying colours. However, Simon did point out that nearside swivel is leaking a bit and really should be looked at.

Q. What is the likely cause and how easy is it to fix? (must get a Haynes manual...)

Try using that fluid grease (one shot) stuff instead of oil, thats if you aint got any play in yer swivel bearings
 
Cheers for that fellas, will check it out next weekend as I might have even more work to do after this weekends trialling...
 
While I don't have a problem with one-shot swivel-grease I don't like the idea of using it to 'cure' a sleaky swivel.
Oil is leaking out because either the seal has failed of the swivel is pitted (or both), using grease instead of oil might stop the symptoms but the leak is still there and while the grease might not be leaking out,water and other muck can get in resulting in more damage long term.

If a new seal is all that is required then it is easy enough to fit but if you don't fancy stripping the swivel you can do the old 'field repair' of splitting the seal, passing it over the axle casing and then bolting it into place with the split at the top. If the swivel is past it and/or you feel like doing the job properly then a swivel strip is required but it's not the end of the world.

Oil or grease, your choice but I must admit I am still on oil myself but I am sure I will consider the grease when it is time to replace my current swivels (the teflon coated ones ones sound good).

oh and when was the last time you split a seal and got it to not leak? the ones i got not so long ago where metal so a split was out of the question
 
Junior hacksaw (nice thin blade) and a spot of sealant. The split is right at the top and if done neatly it will normally remain leak-free indefinately. As I said, this is a field repair but one which works rather well.
Personally I would rather do a strip/rebuild as I only like to do a job once but each to their own.

Yerp!
Go to all that effort, waste half a day Removing the old seal, which is "leaking a bit" Saw a new one £3.00? and refit, fill with oil antoher £3.50?
end up back where you started, with a shagged oil seal that will let in even MORE water and ****e,:eek:

Carrying out this "field repair " would only be a solution if the swivel WONT hold oil.
A new complete kit, inc new ball,is about £65 from Paddocks 1/2 day job

and use the grease, "cos it dunt leak out like oil"
OR just use the fluid grease, it wont **** out like oil and yer should get to yer next MOTwithout any problem, unless yer do a lot of wading or yer swivel bearing are shagged

OR buy a gaylander, they dont have stoopid swivel bits to bust in the first place
 
yeah buy a gaylander, no swivels, but a **** load of expensive electronic stuff to **** *p and of course the well documented fact that bits fall off them when they get wet.

And just in a moment of rash sensibility, didn't someone say something about gaiters that completely encased the swivels, and if they did where d'you get them from?
 
the red blob is a gaylander i was helping to unstick from the sand trap at the 4th green at gleneagles
yeah you can get gaiters from the usual suspects but they themselves can cause problems. **** can work its way in past the strings that hold it together and rather than work it way back out it stays there doing more damage. atleast without the gaiters you can see what yer balls are like.

anyway with shreddies this size its kind of hard not to have some tangles in them
 
So how do you change the swivel seals on a 101?

Like I have have already said, I like to do a job properly and do it once, not have to go back to it in a few weeks / months / years if it isn't necessary. If the seal is shot then I strip the swivel to fit a new one, if the swivel is shot I replace it with a nice new one but there are a lot of people who are afraid of touching the swivel assembly and would rather do a quick fix (ecpecially if it actually works).

Worked out how to change them on a 101 yet?

what the **** are you on about?? you started on about bodging the ****er in by cutting it now you're saying you like to do a proper job and not have to go back in a couple of weeks. make yer mind up will you. ****!
and what has a 101 got to do with a series ?
