My 1978 109 pickup has developed a large leak from the offside front swivel ball housing sweep oil seal.
Looking at it I think the easy way to replace it would be to jetwash all the gunk off the area first, then unbolt the oil seal holder and cut off the old seal.
To put the new one on I was going to neatly cut it, put it in place and superglue the cut back up. The cut I would put at the very top of the housing and then simply bolt it all back in place.

Does this sound feasible, or even like a good idea?

Have you tried replacing oil with grease? Might help with your leak.

Cut and glue doesn't sound good but haven't tried it. Will oil dissolve the glue?

You idea of cutting the seal and gluing it in is done, and can last well if done well. Try and cut the seal with a sort of step in it, so its not just a gap and gives better surface areas for gluing. Once you have done them, replace the oil with oneshot grease.

Used this myself in a leaking swivel, works well, although, its worth topping it up with oil to lubricate the top end. Put the tube into a bucket of boiling water for a bit to make it easier to put in. Use a piece of pipe over the end of the bottle nozzle as its useless trying to get it in without.

If you are doing this particularly for an MOT, I would advise getting swivel gaiters, clean up any oil, and bung them on. Thats what I am going to do because I get a slight leak on full lock from one. The MOT man is not allowed to look under them.

it can be done but its a bodge... take the time and do it right to save possible problems later

above is link to land rover parts store where they offer rubber gaiter kit which is more expensive but less hassle apparently.

need to do the job myself but its way down the list at moment.

Leaking swivels are only a fail on the MOT if the leak is excessive and can contaminate the braking surfaces, that is the only criteria that we are allowed to fail any vehicle on not just Landys. Barry

is it possible for leaky swivel oil to get to the brakes??

If you wipe it off the swivles with a rag then wipe the rag on the brakes I suppose it is.
