Realised recently that I have only been getting sound from the rear speakers so did some digging today. Turns out both front speakers are dead and both had sopping wet connectors, so clearly not very well waterproofed. Tweeters are fine (although rubbish) as they aren't in the door cavity itself.

I'm probably going to stick some Focal component speakers in to replace these, but before I spank my wallet has anyone fitted new speakers and managed to come up with a way to stop them getting wet? Don't really fancy buying new speakers every 18 months!

they should not be getting wet unless some kind person has removed the plastic covering behind them

I need to see how the original membrane was positioned. There's one on the inside of the door directly behind the door card, but nothing behind that and of course the speaker passes through that membrane. Can't see how a membrane would be installed in between the inner and outer door skins?

3 door if I remember?

Yes I have fitted new speakers, make sure they don't have too big a magnet or your window will only go down 3 inches.... ( speaking from experience!) the speaker goes through the membrane, the OE one has a foam ring to seal it's the connections are exposed to the damp in the door but this isn't usually a problem.

I would check your window scraper seals to make sure they are doing their job of at least reducing the amount of water going into the door cavity. Also make sure you drain holes are clear.

Drain holes are good. The connectors were soaking and had a damp black residue all over them that appeared to be from badly corroded copper.

Speakers I've ordered are a couple of mm shallower mounting depth than the factory ones, although they do come with an optional rubber cap on the back that makes them deeper. I'll be using this and matching the depth with some MDF mounts to bring them out in the door a little.

Good point on window seals, I'll take a look.
