Hi guys was wondering if an body could possible help me out with this argent situation??

The other day while driving I went round a right hand bend and my right hand front wheel locked up as soon as I went round the bend and put me to a halting stop on the other side of the road.

When I tried to move off the wheel would not move so I put it in reverse and went back a bit then it went forward again but made a very load crunching noise . While waiting to be recovered one of my mates who is also part of this form and owns a land rover 90 came along to see what he could do to assist and it moved straight away with no problems or crunching noise. so I decide to cancel the recovery and drive back home very carefully. About 5 miles later but on a flat straight part of the road the front right wheel locked up again and took me to the other side of the road again and made the same noise as I tried to drive of again. It was dark and I did not have a torch on me so I could not expect the situation at the time.

Does anyone have any ideas what could of caused it and if so how to fix it?

Cheers

I don't own a freelander

and yeah that's what I thought at first but normally when a bearing goes the wheel is left at a slight angle and the wheel looks fine

I think jacking it up and checking the wheel for play then taking it off and checking the condition of the brakes would be a good starting point! Guessing a fix to a life threatening fault is not good!

Well, that's one less then .
How are we supposed to help if you dont even tell us wot vehicle it is?

It could be a bus, for all we know :(.

Wheel bearings give excessive pedal travel not lock up! Unless its about to drop off! Next guess

Your going to have to strip it apart, starting at the outside and working your way in until you find the problem anyway but I've never heard of anyone being able to judge the condition of bearings by looking at a wheel

Kicking it works well! Apparently

OK guys thanks for all the messages about how to try and solve hopefully should start work on it later in the week. and will let you know on how it goes and see if we have worked out the problem.

And just to be clear its a land rover defender 90 and I do apologise for the confusion......

After taking parts down we soon realised it was the bearing, but it was not as bad as we had worried about, soon got it off and put the new one on :)

Have you checked that the brake calliper hasn't been damaged, as the wheel must have locked up on something??

Yeah everything else was fine we did have to replace the hub as we had to hammer it of to gain access to the bearing but apart from that nothing else was damaged.
