Hi all, my p38 started making a knocking noise when moving today, looking at it I think the UJ on the front propshaft has failed.

I've done a short video showing the amount of movement, would someone confirm this is way more play than it should have?

Any tips on replacing the propshaft, or even better just the universal joint,is it as easy as it looks?

Thanks very much.

There should be no discernible play in the UJ at all....yours is on its way out, change it before it fails!

I cannot open your video, take the prop off, if the yokes are not damaged then its an easy job to change the u/j's. If they are it's a replacement prop.

Thanks for the quick replies, I've also heard the UJ can also be changed without removing the prop shaft from the car? Anyone done this?

if you have a decent g clamp it is indeed possible, however removing it and using a vice is much more pleasant.

All done today, picked up a new UJ from local allparts for £23.00

Found the best way to undo the 4 bolts holding the front of the prop shaft on was to move the car slightly forward each time to each bolt at the bottom to loosen it, dropped the front of the prop shaft down and slid it off leaving the rear UJ in place.
Original one was pretty tough to get out but managed it ok.

I'm now feeling very pleased with myself 😊

I hope you put the slider back in the right place or the UJ phasing will be out.
