Has any one had any issues with tire shoulder wear? I have a p38 96 4 v8, over the last month i have noticed that the shoulder on the n/s front tire has started to wear down , i've not clumped any curbs , and the wheels are scuff free ... running on 19s ... I' m fully aware i could be just down to tracking , or a bush worn out , but just wanted to ask if for any other reason this could happen .... Thanks Rob :blabla:

Would that be inner shoulder, outer shoulder or both sides?

i've got the same problem, drivers side, the outside of the tyre is being worn down, had the tracking done March, any ideas?

Without going into castor and camber angles, which so long as you have not hit anything hard and your ball joints are ok should not be a problem. Generally if you have wear on the outside, too much toe in. If you have wear on the inside, too much toe out. If you have wear in the middle over inflation. If you have wear on the inner and outer shoulders under inflation. Take the vehicle to a garage with a laser setup system, it is the only true way of aligning the vehicle and finding if axles are in line and true. You can play with straight edges and tape measures til your blue in the face and find nothing. You could do a drop check but that is long drawn out and a ball ache to do. The laser is much simpler if a little on the expensive side.

thanks, looks like a visit to the garage,up until now i've managed to do most repairs myself but when you mention lasers were into the realms of sci-fi,so i'll leave it to the experts this time

If you drive on a lot of narrow country roads where you spend a lot of time with one set of wheels over the crown of the road you get a lot of this inner tire wear.

Happens all the time over here and is worse with live axles than independant suspension.

check the viscous coupling in the transfer box,as this is what happend to mine.do the tyres squeel when you turn around in a tight corner?

nope,no squeeling around corners and cruises at 90 on the motorway without any vibration or rumbling,i'm in France so drive on the right hand side of the road so SPUDH's suggestion doesn't apply

dont kwikfit check ya tracking and alignment for free? The only thing id let em check on my motor, mind.

Was in there today to get wheels balanced, stupid f**kers were getting busy to start jacking on the frame, till I pointed out they'd be quicker if they went with the axles... and I'd rather they didn't stress the airbags! Also had to ask them to torque the nuts properly rather than airgun them to buggery.

I do my own repairs so it will never arise. But i would not trust a Kwik fit fitter to screw the cap back on a milk bottle.

I agree with this. I've had a strange wear on the outer edge of the n/s/f tyre.

Things to check also include panard rod bush play and also the condition of the airspring on that corner. If it is leaking air and is softer on that corner, it can lead to abnormal wear.

Check your viscous , 9/10 on front odd tyre wear is viscous , if it is just loose the front prop until its changed

A bit obvious, but if most of your driving is on bends `n` roundabouts rather than long flat straight roads then maybe the tyres edges are just working harder than the rest? Maybe swop tyres around front to back to even `em up?

Most likely cause is worn track rod end. I had same problem, changed track rod and everything OK now. Its fairly easy to do.

Tracked it myself - made a tool from a spare piece of coppet pipe. Pressed a fine threaded nut in one end and screwed a bolt in to give micro adjustment. Worked fine and cost me nowt.

You can test to see if the viscous coupling in the transfer box is sticking by jacking the vehicle up and spinning the wheels.

I forget the exact procedure, but someone will know.

It's a fairly common fix.

Just jack one front wheel, you should be able to turn it but it will require a lot of effort. If it wont turn at all, the viscous coupling has sei:doh:zed
