Right just spent 2 days cutting off welded on bumper, bullbar and winch mount and found that front bits where bumper attaches have been rotten and plated. Started cutting sections out intending to replate but tbh... I don't know how happy I'd be to botch it up as I notice the rot has spread down a bit. Scraped out right pile of rusty flakes that used to be good steel.

The replacement chassis legs look to be about 90 quid per side!!!!!

Is this an easy job just taking wings, radiator off etc? Or is it a difficult job best left to experts?

Went through 15 quid of cutting discs cutting all this out!!! Lots of 6mm steel plates and BIG WELDS!!!!

Have you done the rear cross member yet? if not, i would consider new chassis. Any more patches/rot along chassis.

Mick I wouldn't consider a new chassis yet. Haven't got the space (land rover just about fits into my garage) or time to do it myself as it needs to stay on the road and couldn't afford to pay the £3000+ that the guys want for doing it right now. Work would need to get a bit busier.

They are in about in the same condition as a lot of the ones I've seen pics of online that people have repaired..I'm just not mad keen on patching over stuff. Especially as they all seem to rot a bit further in if showing rot outside.

I have no plans to sell and if it stays that way then might go for galvanised chassis in a few years.

2 patches on rest of chassis. I've seen worse chassis on younger ones...put it that way.

Cross member is original...not rotted just getting scrappy.

Dunno, I think the chassis is still too good to consider replacing just yet.

Get some pics up....

I took the rad surround and wing off to repair this

That's good job. Did you have a load of flaky rusty crap to scrape out from inside?

What about the metal housings that the bolts go through...did you fabricate something to replace or just leave as is?

One of mine is rusted where bolt holes are too.

Actually I can see all the flaky crap in there.

I see lots of people have this problem. I just don't like the idea of the steel being thinner along the was now which is why was considering replacements. But the price of them is shocking for what they are!!!!!
