Hi,
As some of you will know I am renovating a Series 2a overseas, and have started with the axles. All has gone well until I took the front springs off and it appears that the chassis bush has been welded in!! I assume the chassis was damaged or a bush was too small but any ideas why it is welded - or more importantly how the get the thing out!!

This could be one more step towards a re chassis!!

For removal just attack it with the angle grinder to get rid of the welds. Next you need to drill a series of holes through the rubber so you can knock out the centre sleeve. After you have done that slide a hacksaw blade through then mount the blade upside down in a hacksaw. Saw through outer bush then use a hammer & chisel to knock out the outer sleeve. I'm wondering if the chassis tube is knackered hence the bodge??
 
Are you sure the its actually the bush that is welded? The bush is pressed into a piece of tube that is welded into the chassis, is that what your seeing? Obviously the bush only has a thin outer steel sleeve so can easily be hidden by rust and dirt when it's in the chassis

It is a bit unclear but when I get the angle grinder our I am sure all will be explained!!
 
I'd hesitate to just start grinding welds because you could be grinding the sleeve out of the chassis, which would make you more work you could avoid, clean it all up and try and determine what id bush and what is chassis
 
Use a wire brush in a grinder to clean up the area, its less agressive than a flap disk or grinding wheel and will let you see whats what
