hi my mates buying a freelander 2 ltr diesel ,he,s asking how many miles to the gallon will he get.

thanks

My Td4 Mk3 Automatic so far is doing around 32 mpg but I've been everywhere in it, off road and motorways so there's no telling what it's really capable of on a steady cruise. I guess 38 to 40 mpg is achievable if you've a manual and a light foot :rolleyes:

But who want's to 'cruise' in a vehicle with this capability?

Give you my real life comparison;

In my old 1.6 litre petrol Astra; Leeds to London and back would cost me £120. About 2 full tanks.

In my 2.0 diesel FL TD4; Leeds to London and back is about 7/8 of a full tank. A full tank currently being a little over £60.

My L series does about 60 miles on £10 so that would be bang on 30 mpg with diesel being at £1 a litre at the moment

You've got a problem with your L Series then - or very short journeys in heavy traffic from cold!

L-series - at least 30mpg
TD4 - around 40mpg

Cheers

Blippie
This is rubbish. Both engines are pretty much the same on fuel - if anything the L Series will generally be better. Both will give you roughly 40 on the open road and both will drop down towards 30 in heavy traffic cold stop/starting. I've never got close to 30mpg in my L Series - always much closer to 40. Add an auto box on the TD4 and pump 20% more fuel.

Really i think that the temp sensor maybe on its last legs as the car starts on the button from freezing cold ...well since i changed the glow plugs on saturday !
Any other reasons why my mpg is rubbish ?

do not know why your car is rubbish but if you find out let me know mind you the wife keeps saying I drive to fast and I must admit if she drive we get better fuel economy ,also I suppose that heavy roof rack and lights may be my problem but hopefully this year I can get the time to make a roof rack out of alloy.

I recon those lights are like an air brake! If the car's pushing those along, its going to affect consumption more than the weight of the rack.

I used to occasionally put stuff on the roof rails on my V8 D1 - if I was heading into a decent wind, the motor would really struggle!

Ive based my mpg on just £10 i put in the other day and the beast hasn't been used for ages properly so it may get better as i drive it more as the battery has been poor after a week possibly 2 of not driving it, maybe the ecu has to self learn again not quite sure but it does seem to get better the more i drive
