Hi.

I've got a Freelander 1998 TDI (LHD) which recently has started taking in water. Exactly where we're at a loss to say, but the local LR garage has quoted £1,700 to fix the problem. They say that it could be a faulty front window screen or leaky doors. However, they also say that they CAN NOT guarantee that their "repairs" will stop this from happening again. Seriously, how can they expect someone to pay that kind of money, and not get total satisfaction! Anyhow, if someone's had this problem before, I'd like to hear, how it was fixed and by whom. (I'm in the South Croydon area.)

depends on where it is letting in water. fairly common that it comes in through the boot seal and fills up the under floor cubby box. new seal should cure that. If it's front of car (passenger cabin), two people and a hosepipe (or better a jetwash) should help to pinpoint the area of leaking. one inside the car one out, direct jet of water at each seal in turn (windscreen, windows, doors, sunroof) and see if it comes in.

the reason the garage have priced so high and won't guarantee the work is they don't want to do it. jobs like this are notoriously problematic, and the last thing they want is the car turning up again everytime there is another episode of leaking.

His idea is the best. If this doesn't solve your problem....as a last resort...use duct tape around the door seals

The boot one is notorious and it is often better to glue the seals properly in place as they do slip a bit and when they do they can leak. In my experience most of the door ones also do the same, I used a gluegun to put all my door seals in place. I would be suprised if your windscreen was leaking, you will hear louder wind noise if there was an issue. Also get underneath and check all bungs are in place.
