take it off along wit the propshaft and you'l have a nice front wheel drive car for shopping commuting etc
 
take the prop of mate get a blanking plate , and run 2 wheel drive !! get 40 too the gallon if its a diesel ! as there is no need for 4 wheel drive anyway in this country . if you want to go offroad buy a swb series landy , built for the job and tow it on a trailor too the offroad course on a trailor with ya freelander in comfort !!

Couple of points
1) You can get 40 to the gallon from a Freelander in 4WD
2) 4WD is useful towing a caravan across a sloping field with long wet grass and mud.

To answer the OPs question. You can get it reconditioned but make sure you go to someone reputable such as Bell Engineering Products - Bell Engineering
