Well people, my Freelander has finally returned from the garage after it's head gasket replacement. List of work was as follows:

* Car towed on low loader to garage (17 miles away)
* Both heads skimmed and preasure tested.
* New head bolts.
* New head gaskets.
* New cooling system header tank.
* 3 new cam belts.
* 2 new cam belt tensioners.
* Various "O" rings and other gaskets.
* Oil filter and oil.

Garage had the Freelander for just over 2 weeks and the final bill came to £1600. The warranty company paid £525 of this as they would only pay for work to one head gasket, how tight is that?
So there you have it. Compared to some stories and prices I've heard of, the cost for a V6 engine was very good.

Yes, but still 1.075 £ too much. Of course it's all mechanic things so all this can happen but in my opinion the only money one should have to pay for a car is the loan, maintenance, normal wear and fuel. All the rest, even the slightest repair is too much.:mad:

hi all,
i am still quite new to the forum, but was wondering if you could help , with what i hope may be a small problem.
i recenlty had the radiator in my 2001 td4 changed , because she was drinking water like it was going out of fashion. when i went out to check the water level this morning , i noticed that the water had turned black and after a run of about 10 miles she smells quite oily. i am hoping that it is not the dreaded head gasket, as the oil is oily looking with no water in it, and she is not puffing any smoke( yet) .
does anyone out there have any idea what may be causing the water to go black. as i am enjoying my car and are planning to join my local off road club.
cheers in advance
markone.

Hi Markone,
Well it sounds to me like a head gasket failure but I would expect the oil to have traces of water in it as well as the water having traces of oil in it. You could take it back to the garage that changed the radiator and ask them to check it out? I've had my V6 Freelander back a week now after the head gaskets were changed and the coolent is still a lovely pink colour, it's organic according to the bill I got :)
Let us know what the problem is if you find out and lets hope it's not expensive to put right.
