Hiya my dad has had a new rear silencer fitted to his freelander. Not the same as original, only one tailpipe, and 8.5" wide instead of 12". He thinks his vehicle is sounding a bit rough, would this be why? Thanks:(

funny you should mention this as I had a new back box fitted to my 2001 td4 to get it through mot. when it was fitted beginning of february it seemed fine but about a week later it started making like a whistling noise at 2000rpm, the noise is like.......remember them plastic flexible tubes you had as a kid that you spun round to make a noise. But like your dad my old one had 2 tail pipes but this one has only 1 wide one. I rang where I bought it from and explained to them my situation, they said they've never heard of this problem and that 1 tail pipe instead of 2 should'nt really make a difference unless there is a small hole in pipe or box. Awaiting them ringing me back as they are informing manufacturer of the problem. Don't know if this would make any difference to engine performance or make it run a bit rough though, like you I would like to know if it would.

cheers for advice mate already checked hoses as that was my first thought, but got wife to rev engine while i checked for noise and it was definately coming out of tailpipe. garage has ordered me a new one to swap, noticed when i bought it that there was a dent in the box so probably been dropped but didn't look that bad. soon see when i put new one on mate
 
Din't they use a smaller eggsause back box on later td4's at some stage? Seem to remember something about this...

Our 22006 TD4 auto had the larger twin tail pipe back box fitted as standard, it was always being hit when off road, eventually it got ripped off - not a pretty sight.
Went to the dealer and ordered a new one. When it came it was the smaller single pipe version, I questioned the parts guy, he said that that build should have had the smaller exhaust, but Land Rover would fit the larger back box (V6?) in production if stock levels required it. Both work, the new one will be noisier for a few hundred miles until it carbons up - no noticable power difference. Much less likely to get hit or foul the towbar.

If new one is no different then that one will be returned as well and i'll further query the twin tail pipe version cos it is quite an annoying noise mate

did dealer say that back box would go quiet after few hundred miles when it carboned up?? as mine has done about 500 miles and noise still the same mate. I think i'm been fobbed off by place I bought it from as it has been a few weeks now since I rang them but all I get is that its on back order, bull**** me thinks.

If there is a problem in this respect, it will often show up in your exhaust emissions. One way to see if there is a problem is to get your exhaust emissions tested. If they are well within the limits, then you're good to go.

That said, it is not uncommon for different exhaust systems to sound slightly different. Unless you paid an absolute fortune, I doubt you have a genuine Land Rover part, if that's the case then you shouldn't expect it to be identical.

should'nt matter if land rover part or not it should still not whistle surely mate

It is a Land Rover. It will make all sorts of noises. Get used to it because that's what I had to do when I sold my BMW for a Freelander. Used to make me paranoid but then I stopped caring.

I had the same problem when I went from the Mercedes 190E to the FL, I started hearing all kind of noises and cracks etc.. in the dash and elsewhere which I never heard before in the 190, after putting rubber etc.. between the plastic pieces or even glued some pieces together, with little difference:p, I stopped worrieng and since then life is so good in the Hippo .....:D:D:D:D:D
 
Gone the other way - Defender > Discovery > Freelander - can't get used to the quiet ride and lack of transmission rumble and tyre noise.
Like Willo says - you can only compare with what you are used to.
It's certainly quieter than the low end hire cars I used to drive at work.

Have you managed to get to the bottom of this whistling noise, my freelander has the same fault a few weeks after fitting a replacement back box?
