hi guys,

got a problem with my 02 freelander td4 auto. and hope someone can help.

here goes- sometimes the car runs fine and pulls well and no issues at all and all of a sudden when it hits just over 3000rpm it seems to lose all power and wont change gear. this generally happens when traveling at 40mph +

how you guys can help again

Fuel pumps seem to be flavour of the month, similar symptoms on mine. A quick check on the dealers putah to make sure. Fleabay for pump and filter(while you are there), less than £100 for both.

thanks mate, its just been serviced and the mechanic said the only fuel filter was in the fuel tank is this true? every car i have owned had a fuel filter under the bonnet! he connected it to his computer and it wasn't showing any faults.

no, it's not true. 2000-2002 models had a fuel filter under the bonnet. Late 2002 onwards had them mounted in a cradle behind the drivers side wheelarch along with the sedimenter & low pressure fuel pump.
I'd look for a new mechanic if I were you.
Once you've changed your filter & are happy with your pump delivery you should also check the turbo variable vane vacuum solenoid & also make sure that the vane mechanism itself isn't seized as some folk on here have experienced. Plenty of good info if you take your time & search thoroughly.

thanks for the info, my mechanic said that my turbo was not a variable vain one? will look for the fuel filter this morning.

anyone recommend a good mechanic in Lampeter area?

If your turbo is not a variable vane unit then it's been replaced at some point with a fixed vane unit which they did fit to saloon cars like the rover 75.
Sadly though, after the fuel filter fiasco I'd be inclined to think that your mechanic isn't really up to scratch.

The main dealers cant get it started? Wazzocks!
Probably needs bleeding through bet loads of air still trapped in system!
Had to tow start my hippo kept bumping it to get the air through the injectors.
Is there any mist or smoke coming from the exhaust when your cranking?

You definitely need to change mechanics! Two things he has said that the FL hasn't got that it definitley has.

HI Gwyn, i have a 2002 freelander td4 serengeti and im experienceing the same problem, 1st of all the tc/ hill decent lights came on and then went off, then i noticed whilst towing the caravan up a hill it started to lose power at about 50 mph+ and dropped away down to near 20mph quite scary actually when youve 2 kids in the car and on steep incline hill, then i noticed on the way home after putting the caravan in storage i went onto the fast lane on the motorway and at 70mph it dropped power big style and wouldnt change gear? did you manage to get yours sorted yet? if so what was the prob cheers. Daz:)
