My wifes 2001 td4 freelander had an oil leak round the near side drive shaft which we never noticed till it was low in oil now there is a bearing grumbling. How can you tell if it is the main box or the transfer box without stripping the box out as I cant have the car off the road too long.

check oil level in both boxes , is it noisier on corners , when accelerating or on over run or all the time ,road speed related etc drain some oil out and checking for contamination can help with diagnoses after youve tried simple stuff

plus 1 also make sure u follow the oil change very carefully if it's an automatic gearbox

put in a quick search on here and hippo has written an excellent article in how to change oil in an auto box

also if it is make sure u don't take out the wrong bolt otherwise u end up with no reverse

Checked the box it bearing where the near side drive shaft comes out the box has excess play in it. Can you change this bearing with out removing the box?
