Hi guys I'm new to this site and just after some advice about my car that's driving me crazy .
Here goes .i have a freelander td4 54 reg that when driving in low gears is fine but when I shift into 3rd And 4th and accelerate hard it feels like the clutch is slipping and the revs go up but then quickly catches up . Please note it does not slip 1st or 2nd .

a slipping clutch will occur firstly in higher gears so , you seem to have diagnosed the problem . next comes the financial shock of a clutch replacement on a TD4 manual :(

may need dmf as well

Hi mate
Do you think it's the clutch?
Would an air leak have the same effect ?
I have found what looks like a fuel filter in the engine bay and only one end is connected . Any ideas where it should go ?

An air leak wouldn't spike revs like that. What's the mileage?

That fuel filter in the engine bay is the turbo solenoid vent filter. Only one end is connected.

Hi mate
The mileage is 96000 roughly
I also forgot to mention but I've had tha prop shaft and vcu removed so is running in front wheel drive mode at the min , would this have an effect ?
Also what's a dmf ?

DMF = Dual Mass Flywheel.

Under 100K would be premature for the clutch to go, but I suppose it's down to how it was driven. Mine's at 130K and while it will need a clutch overhaul at some point soon, apart from the occasional crappy clutch pedal feel, it's not that bad.

if you can DIY it then its not so expensive - but a bit of a pig of a job

i replaced the clutch plate and release bearing in mine a few years ago after burning it up off road :(

cost a bit over €uro 200 for parts at the time.
left the od DMF in - it had little play was just slightly blue .............

Thanks for all your help guys . Just priced up a clutch doesn't look too bad but I think I'll leave the flywheel as its £300 I could do without spending . I'll let you know how I get on .. Wish me luck .

Hi guys
I took the car to have the clutch checked and they said the clutch is fine . But are unsure as to why it's having this problem . Would an air leak do anything like this and is there a way to check ?
Just to clarify when I shift into 3rd gear and keep my foot planted the revs go up sharply then back down and then the car accelerates as normal .

Did you have to change the clutch?

A contaminated clutch plate is a possibility..

I sure do hope they replaced the clutch, instead of just taking it out, eyeballing it then putting it back in!!!

Hi, I am aware this is an old thread but my car (2011) on 90k is doing the same. I wonder if Bigpluke could share what solved his issue? I'm not convinced mine is the clutch either I drive like a snail and never tow (although I am guilty of sometimes resting my foot on the clutch which may press it down a couple of CM's).
