Hi i've got a mark 1 freelander 02,
Coming home from work today and it seemed to be missing then when i put my foot down to accelerate black smoke was coming from exhaust!!
any ideas what the problem is ?

Thanks
Pagie

check rubber hoses in engine bay - you will probably find a hole in one of them as it rubs on a fixing :)

Spongy oil contaminated intercooler hoses close up and restrict airflow under high revs, lack of air results in unburnt fuel and causes black smoke. Freelander intercooler hoses are a known problem check these before you lay out on more expensive remedies.

yep, intercooler hoses are the first thing to check, best to whip them off as you might not spot a hole on the rear. do a search, there plenty of pics and info on here:)

Bet they look like this! This was mine just after porous spongy feel .

Yep i would check the intercooler hoses, the main one on the right hand side of the engine i had was split, which caused it to misfire and black smoke. I replaced it and its been fine ever since! :)

A set of TD4 injectors wont fit a TD4? :?

Should point out that they are not from the L-Series I am breaking, and they are actually removed from a TD4...

Hi Guys

I have a Freelander 1.8k W-reg. It was working fine until I like an idot put in too much engine oil. Pure white smoke started coming out of the exhuast and the car wouldn't start up properly. I took it too my mechanic and he drained all the engine oil out of it and put in new one. The car drives like normal but There is still blueish whitish smoke coming out of the exhuast. My mechanic told me that it will wash away after a while. The engine temperature is normal and there are no signs of leaking or head gasket failure or anything. He did tell me that I have to replace the fuel exhuast middle box which is blown.
I wanted to know how long would it normally take for the smoke to clear away or are there more serious problems?
Any help you guys could give would be appreciated.
Thanks

it will be your intercooler pipes one or the other has a split in it i bet it is the longer one of the 2 and your hand will get covered in diesle

Just wanted to thanks, just had black smoke and loss of power in my 03 Freelander TD4 thought head gasket and worse then read your threads and you were right found split on oil cooler pipe fixed now so thanks again.

Hello guys, got Landrover Freelander TD4 2004, bought couple weeks ago, was getting clouds of black smoke when accelerating, so changed crankcase breather filter with turbo vent filter, air filter, all 5 hoses into silicones ones and cleaned EGR valve, got better after this, but still getting little bit black smoke when accelerating, any ideas? Thanks

Injectors over fuelling, have you carried out the checks advised on here which proves the amount per injector ?
