Evening guys.

Had my auto box drained & fluid replaced today. I'm currently staying in Scotland so don't have access to my ramps/trolley jack so booked it in for the work to be done at a local garage we trust. The guys in there all run Landys, 2 freelanders a 110 a p38 and a L322.

Anyways after getting the invoice through I can see they have invoiced me for 4 litres of Mobil ATF 320 146412 and not the Texaco N402 fluid. I was under the impression that it had to be the Texaco stuff and used this in the past doing it myself, however they have used a different fluid and I'm not 100% happy about that. By the time I found it on the invoice the Garage where closed for the evening so I'll be phoning first thing. Can anyone advise if this fluid is suitable and if it's just an alternative for the Jatco box?

Personally I wouldn't want anything else except N402 in mine. I found the following info on a jag forum and it turns out that this jatco box is used in quite a few vehicles but my gut feeling is that each manufacturer will have used a different spec of fluid due to the different uses of their cars. there are people on here who will say 'its jst an auto box use any atf fluid' but having read some horror stories about the auto's i don't think its worth the risk!! someone did post that GSF were supplying a carlube atf fluid that was texcao n402 compatible....

The Jatco JF506E transmission is used in other vehicles under different names.

2002+ Volkswagen GTI
2002-03 VW Jetta
2004+ VW Golf
VW calls the Jatco a "09A" 5sp Tiptronic which calls for fluid part # G 052 990 A2

2002+ Land Rover Freelander
Land Rover calls the jatco what it is "JF506E" which calls for LRN402G aka Texaco N402 fluid

2002-? Mazda MPV 5f31j
2003-? Mazda 6 5f31j
Mazda calls the jatco a "5f31j" which calls out M-III ATF fluid (this is a specific mazda fluid)

Jaguar X-Type
Calls for the following fluid specs
Esso LT 71141; Shell ATF 3403 M115; Shell M1375.4; MERCON V XT-5-QM ATF; IDEMITSU K17; Jatco 3100 PL085

I then found the following fluid which has been tested and passes the specs for:
Volkswagen - G052 990
Land Rover - Texaco N402
Jaguar - Shell M1375.4 (also Idemitsu's K17 and BMW's LT71141)

These approvals are enough to make me feel very comfortable putting this in my X-type, but I added the info so you can decide for yourself.

Hmm Will see what the guys at the Garage say & point them at a quick google search as the general consensus is to use the N402. It does seem to be running really well but I don't want future issues for such a stupid thing as the type of fluid used. Anyone used anything but N402? What results have you found.
 
I've read as much as I can about this. It seems that the issue is mixing different oils. When auto boxes are rebuilt (and hence fully drained), they seem to run happily on ATF, but please correct me if that's wrong. The problem seems to be that it isn't possible to fully drain the box, so when you are "replacing" fluid, you are actually just topping it up. All this only makes sense if the two oil types don't mix or in some way hinder each other...
 
If you follow the instructions on the jatco oil chnge then you only replace 42% of oil by my calculations. :(
