Thanks a lot that's what I will do then and see what happens. I changed my PCV about 12000+ miles ago for the vortex one and it has been fine. I figured if BMW use it in THEIR engines then I would do the same. Seeing as how they designed it and all. Not really known for their inefficiency and bad design I thought.
 
The vortex assembly was used after problems started with clogged filters in M47 powered BMWs. The vortex can't clog in normal circumstances, so is better in that respect. It doesn't make huge amount of difference if a small amount of oil mist gets into the combustion chamber. There could be a potential for some oil loss, but in the Freelander it's probably minimal.
See how you find it and report back. You never know, you might convince me to do the mod to mine;)

I never bothered with my old one, just changed filter every year.

Will do, so far it drives, sounds and idles better. :)

I don't know about that. BMW use plastic component's where others use aluminium. They do this to keep costs down and replacement parts being supplied.
Owning a BMW myself, I find the build quality little better than any other major manufacturer. It's the perceived improvement in quality that BMW rely on, not the actual quality.
Audi are far superior to BMW as far as production quality goes. Sadly Audi didn't supply engines to LR.

Mind you, I guess Germans have had at least a couple of really bad ideas in the past.......

Having stripped an Audi A3 I can agree 100% with Nodge on this one. Audi quality and attention to detail is amazing. Puts the crappy build quality of LR to shame.

That's it I'm off to buy an Audi. Always liked them. Had a Volkswagen before the TD4. It went a bit mad. Electronically speaking
 
Audi are well ahead of VW where design and manufacture are concerned;)

Of course they would be - it's almost like they use whole different parts and everything.....

Don't forget the original crankcase breather with the loo roll filter on the Td4 is a BMW design but they changed it late in the lifecycle of the engine and didn't pass the improvement on to Rover/Land Rover as they'd sold them by then!

That is hard to believe but stats can't lie. o_O
The really weird thing about Audi's is they are cheaper than VW's. At least that is what we found when looking for a car for my daughter. She wanted a VW Golf but everything we looked at was either too expensive or knackered. Then we looked at Audi A3's and immediately found 3 in her price range all the right age and condition. She now has a superb 2008 Audi A3 with around 90k miles. Waay younger and fresher than any Golf for sale at similar money.

Anyway back on topic and really interesting to hear Nodges thoughts on the cyclone breather. Like most I thought it was meant to be the superior part but I always wondered why LR fitted the foam filter. I guess it might be down to how the average Freelander is driven compared to the average Beemer. Beemers will likely spend most of their time on motorways whereas Freelanders tend to do more short runs.

That's pretty bad for an 05 car! Both my 02 cars had plates rusted away but the bars were still OK. Yes they were rusty but not as bad as yours. I wonder did LR make them from thinner tube in later cars?

My 05 SE isn't anything like as rusty. Sure there's some surface corrosion, but nothing to suggest a replacement is imminent.
 
My old one was a 05, and it was the plates that rusted not the tubes. The plates look pretty solid, but tubes are knackered. Suppose it all depends were they've been, if they've spent time near the coast. Or they've not been kept clean underneath. When it gets warmer, going to put it on ramps and underseal it. :)

Mine was from Bristol, which is known to rust cars prematurely. I have the odd spot of ruts on some panel edges. But underneath it's all pretty rust free.

lol.....if it's just surface rust, treat it and paint it. Will be fine.......today hasn't gone to plan, a job at my brothers work over ran. So wouldn't have time to do mine, so getting done Thursday now.......hopefully dry tomorrow, so I can get some painting done.

Mines fine on the panels, except stone chips on the door shuts. That my mate is doing for me......but a lot of surface rust underneath. :)
