Hi all I bought my self a Freelander TD4 a few months back so joined here as don't know much about cars so always good to get other peoples input. I noticed a tapping noise coming from the engine when I first got the car. As I never had a Land Rover or any type of 4x4 before I thought this was just the sound of the engine. I was told by another driver that it didn't sound right and that it is more then likely a sticky tappet (what ever that is) and that it would be sorted if I flush the engine and change the oil. I called the AA out as I have got break down cover just to get them to give there advice. I was told to book it in with DTM as he thought it could be a diesel injector and they would be the best people to get it sorted. I phoned DTM to find out what the out come was only to be told that its not the diesel injector and that it seems to becoming from the inside the engine and the only way to find out what it could be is to open the Cylinder Head. Has anyone out there had the same problem or what your views are on this topic would be helpful.

Thanks In Advance

Hi, I've aloso just bought a Freelander 1 TD4 as it happens. So, on the basis that there's "nothing's new under the sun", I Googled "TD4 engine noise". The following thread from another forum covers the whole topic in all it's gory detail! (Hope I don't get accused of thread poaching!) Cutting to the chase, I'd get a reputable garage ( choose carefully!) to investiagte and get the head off if necessary, no big deal nowadays. The story on the other forum revolves around a previous repair being botched so maybe a "health check" for your engine is a wise move. Here's the link but be warned, it's long and a bit scary!

The TD4/BMW M47 engine is one of the best diesels around and mine runs like a dream. So get it sorted and you'll enjoy every minute of TD4 driving - I certainly am!

Let us know how you get on and good luck!

Well over two weeks now at the garage still not knowing what is wrong with it. Phoned them up today for a update on it only to be said that the engine is fully taken apart and the maniac has taken and there just wating on him given them a quote. I don't relly know whats taken them so long to say what it is and how much its going to cost. Must admit I don't know how they run there busness when it seems like for a garage they do seem to take there time on doing things and don't get back to the customer when they say they will. If I was like that in my work I would be shot for bad customer service if they can't handle the work load then why not say when people phone up to book it in so they can at lest phone other garages who might get it done sooner!!! still phone them back up tomorrow for yet another update. Thanks for the Post
