Hello all

Strange question here.........I have a 2006 TD4 and it costs £480 a year to tax!!!
My question is, is a car itself categorised or is it the engine?
Reason I ask is in my tiny brain I'm thinking of replacing the engine with an earlier model (even a month earlier, that's how ridiculous it is!) and saving £200+ a year

Any help on this matter would be appreciated

Darren

Effectively the car - as its based on the official emissions when the car was new you are stuck with it - unless you convert it to electric ;)

If I remember correctly the last Freelander 1's built were caught up in the higher ved tax bands. Hence a difference of something like £200 per year increase for the same vehicle from a different year. Older vehicles were excused the higher charges if registered before particular dates.

My 2001 v6 at 2497cc creating CO2 of 298gm/km was £225 to tax last Feb.

My freelander td4 2005 is going to be £285 insurance £200
and my little Daewoo Matiz 800cc 2004 is £180 insurance £195

either one is cheap or the other one is dear!

Cheers lads, had a feeling it was the case, direct debit for evermore it is then!

I pay £285 per year for my 2.7L Discovery 3. If you want to pay less road tax, buy a 55 plate Freelander instead. Tax for that is £285.

I'm sticking with what I have got. Mine was registered in July "06 as costs £485. Selling and buying an older one will cost me more than the difference saved. Maybe I'll buy a smart car £0 tax per year for running around in.

Is it an Auto? I always though auto's pushed emissions into the next band.

Mines a manual 2005 55Plate TD4 and it's £285

This is all very strange. According to my V5, mine was registered on 31/07/2006. CO2 emissions are given as 205 g/km. I paid £285 for my current VED.

The attachment is what is given about the car in ToPIX

Yep, my TD4 was registered in September 2006 and is in the lower tax bracket. I almost bought a petrol X Trail but the tax was frightening...although mybe not as frightening as the Freelander maintenance bills!
