I've got an 04 Freelander Sports automatic with less than 50,000 on the clock. Recently I've noticed a distinctive clunk that seems to be coming from the rear end when I accelerate quickly. It doesn't happen if I accelerate very gently, but as we all know, that isn't always possible. Before I take it to the garage, any fellow Freelander fans got an idea what the problem could be..?

sounds like diff mounting bushes - check the rear centre/front one for excess movement - should be no more than 5mm - preferably much less.

Yup, your rear diff mounts will be shot:

Very common fault, you can either spend £10 on a replacement and it'll last a year if you're lucky or get a good quality one for 3-4 times that!

Thanks mate, I'll have them looked at by my garage guy tomorrow. If that is indeed the problem, I'll get decent replacements.

I replaced mine again after just a couple of months using cheap items from the Bay.

Thought I was getting a bargain, with hindsight, they are RUBBISH

Opted for the strong sporty polypropylene bushes, much harder and long-lasting, and the auto box gear changes now feel sharp as a razor, better than newn. No clunks on take-up, ad I have done lots of miles and enthusiastic driving.

Get the polypro' bushings - you won't regret it
