Hello!
I've just bought an original Philips R770 radio unit for my 2001 Freelander.
The problem is, when i turn it on it lights up for a few seconds, beeps at me and then dies... as far as i know, everythings been plugged in that should be. I can't see anything dangling down the back. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like it's faulty or locked out (do you have the code?).
I'm curious as to why you'd buy a standard, poor sounding and low feature stereo, when decent aftermarket stereos are now so cheap and feature packed.

I'm afraid i'm just a sucker for originality! I don't have the code yet, i'm waiting to recieve it from an online radio de-coders.
I've read in a few places that it may be the connection between the radio and the clock that's stopping the radio from functioning. Does that sound possible?

I like originality too, but not to the extent of it affecting my listening pleasure.

It won't work without the code, so it could be locked out, if an incorrect code has been entered a few times.

Possibly. I'm presuming the original HU was also a Phillips 770 and not the other make, who's name escapes me at the moment.

Yeah, it says in the owners handbook that it's a Philips R770... maybe it IS locked.
I thought the clock connection issue sounded like a reasonable diagnoses though as (apart from the time) i get no display on the clock when i turn the radio on.
Here's a pic of the connections anyway, maybe you'll spot something that i've missed!

clock is not connected, here is mine,

big black plug on top is from CD case "vertical" black plug on left is from clock

Ah, Baptista!
That's really helpful, thanks! So i've got some wires dangling somewhere that need finding... job on!
And the top plug is connected to the CD changer you say?

Update: after a few months (literally) of dealing with onlineradiocodes.co.uk. they've informed me that they cannot decode my radio and have issued a refund...
So, does anyone have a reccomendation for a company that may stand a better chance of obtaining a radio code?

Contact your local Land Rover dealer with proof of ownership and the serial number of the radio and they should be able to get you the code from the factory

Most do it by a phone call although Matford Land Rover in Exeter wanted £20 so I transferred all my orders to another LR dealership!!

...right.
Well thanks for the help people, i'm going to get onto my local dealership some time this week and see what they can give me.
Thanks again!
