I have just purchased a Freelander and discovered I have walked into a minefield of problems.

The primary one was overheating and it cost me 400 for a replacement head gasket - uniquely the mnechanic has left out the thermostat causing the temp guage to show no heat for the majority of the time but causing a steam bath in the main cabin so obviously the build up of heat is going somewhere.

Has anyone heard of this and can you cast any light on what he has done and whether it is an appropriate fix.

He has replaced the head gasket and the car currently does not appear to overheat - so there is something right here but I am having difficulty understanding the concept of what he has done.

if you still loosing water, check heater matrix. not sure how easy it is to temp bypass it as a quick fix by joining inlet and oulet together. but i woudnt especially in present weather
