Hi Guys, my mates freelander is all of a sudden not starting. It turns over but nothing happens, and there are no dashboard lights on. The other day I went with my jumpleads and lo and behold the lights came on and it started.....i let the battery charge for a bit, stopped and tried to start again but no lights..I hadn't touched a thing!! and the lights never came back on. Obviously intermittent (excellent) but is there anything obvious that I should look for? Obviously an electrical fault but where?

Hi vitamins

If it starts with the jump leads and doesn't without them it will be one of the terminals that isnt making a good contact or the battery is dead mate. Remove the terminals clean them up and try again if that doesn't do it its your battery mate.

Cheers for that, I immediately thought battery as well and checked terminals. I attached cables again, the lights did not come on but the engine turns over fast as if trying to start (ruling out battery). When the lights came on (only once), it started and ran ok. Maybe I shouldn't have turned it off.

No, what Freelance refers to is the ignition switches are known to go defective, such that the main power feed is not energised but the starter circuit is. The engine cranks but won't start. Mine has suddenly cut out because of this little gem. You might need a new switch!!

Thanks everyone for the posts. The ignition switch was faulty. Tapping it on the side with keys in and on, made the ignition lights flicker on. Replaced the switch and all is well. Cheers again. Vitamins.

I've got a 99 freelander 2.0D battling to start when cold but when warm it starts first turn. replaced glow plugs and replaced injectors about a year ago. lots of white smoke when it starts after about 20 seconds of turning.
please advise?:doh::doh::doh:

Have you checked air intake filter for blockages and check the MAF sensor.

You changed the glow plugs but are you sure they are getting power? Worth a test, your pre-heat relay may have packed up.
