  1. Hi.
    Ive finaly got around to buying a freelander..... well kind of.... i have been offered a 2004 td4 in mint condition with full srvice history for £800..... obviously for that kind of cash i would not be expecting a lot of any car. The body work seems to be in mint condition and the old boy that had it has really looked after it with no off roading. It has a full mot as well. The issue i have is the millage is 200k and as much as i have searched i cant seem to find any evidence of a td4 doing this. I was wondering if any of you have experience of one of these lasting as many miles and how many mor miles would it be capable of? Its a cheap motor and i would only be looking for it to do another 15k but dont want to buy a money pit..... any advice please?
 
200K isn't the end of the road for a well maintained TD4. The M47 engine will do over 300K if looked after correctly. However I would budget for a major service and a VCU as that will be well past it.
 
No reason why it couldn't do, as Nodge says. I would imagine all the rubber bits would need sorting too, if they haven't been already

My previous Td4, an 02, has just passed its MOT at 204,000 miles. At the price you’re buying it, you could afford a few bits to keep it going, e.g. VCU.

Is it the original clutch?
 
On our R40 forum which as the M47 engine there is thread called moon mileage some have done over 300,000 one which was recently put on a T4 for an health check and its original injectors were one the best set we have ever seen, the owner as never used any other fuel than supermarket fuel, he had the car from new the oil as been changed regular every 6,-8,000 miles regular PCV filter change so 200,000 is not to much to worry about even less if most of those miles have bee motorway miles.
 
I’d rather have a well looked after vehicle with plenty of motorway miles on it, than something that has been sat in rush hour traffic, 2hrs a day, stop-starting and only clocking 10 or 20 miles a time. I’m sure the daily wear must be greater, although it does not show up in total miles. At £800, if the rest of the vehicle is good condition I’d be tempted to take a punt knowing that some ancillary stuff will need changing. (But even on a lower mileage one, it would probably need updating anyway due to age). And as others have said, the TD4 could be good for over 300k, - by which time all us ‘dirty diesel bastids’ will have been taxed off the roads. - but that’s another conversation - if they are in no rush to sell, might be worth waiting until after the budget announcements this week, which could give you some more leverage in the price you pay...
 
my old one had over 176,000 on it and it had just only had a new VCU and really I think it was only the support bearing that had gone so look after it and it last you for many more miles and at that price I would not worry
 
I just treated my hippo steering wheel to a £35 bottle of smokestone leather dye from eBay - I redone the complete steering wheel and touched in a couple of marks in the seats and it is a perfect match and seemingly robust as well :) The trick is finding the name of the colour used on your vehicle as I think the facelift ones used different colours, so the smokestone I ordered is only applicable to 97-03 hippos, 04-06 models are different colours.

That looks good. I'll give it a go I think. It looks like it'll keep me happy enough to not warrant removing the wheel and sending it away etc. I take it you're pleased with the result then.
 
My current 01 TD4 has 225K on it now and is going like a good un, I am currently looking to upgrade to a newer one maybe 04-06 just because the insurance co is squeezing older models over 15 yrs old ( wanted € 900 this year )
