Hi guys, just bought TD4 commercial yesterday. I'm using it when I go shooting and to carry my dogs in. I was thinking about a body lift kit and A.T. tyres, but don't want to do anything too serious that will affect the handling of the car, tyre wear etc. What are your thoughts on lift kits and tyres for my needs ? Won't be serious off roading mainly muddy tracks, wet grass fields and rough tracks on the moors.
 
This is for a Freelander 2 yeah? We can make lift kits for them, already make them for the FL1, although we'd need to make a batch to make them commercially viable for us.
Tyres, I run Cooper Discoverer AT3's, many people run Grabbers or BFG AT's, they seem to be your best 3 options.
 
As said, 2005 is a FL1 facelift, identical to my car, we have 40mm lift kits in stock if you're after a set. Tyre choices remain the same
 
Thanks, yakko. ses88,could be interested in a set, do they fit without alteration to inner wing ? I've heard of people cutting body work to make them fit. What is the price of a set ? Thanks

You don't "need" to trim the inner wing, but best to do it anyway while the struts are off, saves any risk later on. The 40mm kit is less severe on inner wing clearance than the 50mm kits available. You will need a set of Monroe camber bolts though for the front's, they can be bought at most LR places online.

Would always recommend knowing what you're doing. As long as you're capable of removing strut assemblies it'll be fine. Let me know, just sold another kit on eBay 5mins ago, so only have 4 kits left from this batch.
 
I recently lifted my freelander 1 TD4 (from 2005) :)

For that I used TJM springs instead of spacers. The entire car gets somewhat stiffer and gets about 30 mm extra clearing. You will not need to make any other mods, the springs will fit in the same space as the originals. It will not really affect on-road handling, but it will allow you to climb / descend some steeper hills then standard. I am unsure if you can still get them (easily) though.
I really like them except for the sound they make on full lock, it keeps making some annoying pling and plang sounds. But they seem to handle great.
They cost me about 120 euro for all four and about 10 euro rent for the spring fitting device (and a few euro's for my lill brother, the mechanic).
And although the yellow springs look cool, after a few metres of greenlaning they are just as brown as the rest of your car :-D.

Regarding tires, I guess there are a lot of great tires out there. I run the General Grabber AT (not the AT2) at 225/75R16. It might sound strange but the AT is the 'new' European version which is supposed to have less road noise. The road noise is doable for a daily driver but do not expect the same whispering sound as a road tire. Last weekend on an off road weekend in Budel, NL (and yes, it was 95% green laning and only about 5% real off road in my class) I found them perform rather well. They handled great on dry ground and on mud as long as it could grab something below the mud. But don't get in wet, plowed trough mud as you will not be able to cross it. But on other DRY stuff, in my opinion they stick like glue. But remember, I have no other tires to match them to except for the original tires that were on it, and that were no AT tires.

I didn't realise these were required for the 40mm lift.

I needed a set for mine when I fitted the kit to my car, I believe all lift kits will need them as the geometry is altered. The pins are 30 odd quid from most LR places online

All the ones I've looked at are about £50 for the Monroe ones where can I get them for that?
 
Did your kit come today? The tracking info I have only shows it as being collected

Not yet. If it doesn't come soon I'll have to abandon home and take the car to the garage so they can have it for cold starting tomorrow morning.

I am around tomorrow. But I need to go out and do some for work!
