Evening all, can someone give me some advice. My 2002 td4 has only on set of keys (a key and seperate two button remote for the central locking). Looking to get a spare set just incase. One Garage said to just get a key cut and that its the remote that need programing to the car. Or is there a ``chip`` in the key that needs programing to the car.:confused:
cheers Andy

Ok, I think from 2000ish keys had the chips in so that includes yours. My local autokey blokey got me two programmed keys for £60 each, I can give you his number if you want. You'll probably be handing over at least double that to a LR dealer.

And if you want a spare remote then search on ebay for mg/rover/freelander remote etc etc, the one you want is part no: 17TN and if you're lucky it'll cost just a few quid. But bear in mind this will need programming to the car via the plug in pluggy thing under the dash.

Had same with my 2006 td4. Key has a chip in and remote needs programming. LR want £250 ish for both and the programming.

Cheapest I can find is £180 all in at simmonites in Bradford.

i have managed to finda guy local to me(Redditch) who cut a new key chipped it and new remote all for £120.00 which is the cheapest i have found

soall:praise:

The landy I recently bought from an independent dealer came with two sets of keys and remotes. One set that works, and one set that is for a different vehicle. I genuinely don't know what's gone on but when I rang the dealer to say that one of the sets of keys and remote didn't work/fit the car they said there was nothing they could do as they were the keys that came with the car. They (supposedly) even contacted the previous owner at my request to find out what was on but no luck. Very odd, and annoying.

Do the keys and fobs look the same? Have you tried the non-working key in the fuel cap? I say this because my non-chipped spare key only opens the fuel cap and does nothing else. If this is the case then maybe the previous owner thought they could copy the original key not knowing the new key would need a chip within like the original to start the ignition. So yes it looks the same maybe but it won't do alot without a chip. That's probably also the reason for the fob not working, it needs programming to your car, cost about £20.

I've tried the key in every lock on the car and it doesn't fit any at all. It is the same design but the cut is completely different. Tried a new battery in the fob attached to it just to make sure too. They are definitely for a different car. I've bought a new blank in the hope that I can get it cut and add the chip from the rogue key and get that, and the rogue fob coded to the car. I expected getting the fob coded would be relatively easy, but can the key chips be done as easily?

(still not happy with the independent dealer though. I can only assume they had another early 2000's landy in at some point and had a mix up with the keys).

apologies for jumping on this thread.

I too have a new key and fob supplied by LR (for £112 I hasten to add).

They tried to laptop programme the fob to the 'under dash' receiver but it failed to register. I'm taking it back next week for a service and in the meantime I'd like to establish where the receiver is because my centre console has been out to replace a heater matrix, and I'm wondering if the darn thing was unplugged and not re=plugged when the dash was re-assembled... so anyone know where the 'receiver' lives please? Specifics would be good :eek: as a newbie...

Thanks

the aerial for the fob is behind the clocks if you take the binicle of from around the clocks you will see it on the right hand side, it is just a thin wire just follow it down.

you say 'clocks'... do you mean the horological kind :D

I've a facelift 2002 Freelander (at least I think it is) with the LCD clock set well into the facia under the windsceen...

or do you mean the tach/speedo clocks - see, told you I was a newbie?

Either way, do the plastic surrounds (binicles?) of each just pull off??? Sounds a pig of a job but would rather have a go myself than pay (unless I can't manage it).

Thanks

You're probably all aware of this by now but Timpsons [shoe repairers] will clone your original transponder and cut a matching key for £50 in about 15 minutes. When I bought mine it had two "blippers" but only one key, so I was paranoid until I got a second key. This info is of no use whatever to the poor sod stuck in Sweden [as you need an original to copy both the key and the transponder from] but it's a much cheaper alternative to LR direct for anyone who wants to act before their personal crisis hits.

the speedo and the techograph clocks, sorry i can not remeber were all the screws are but some one on here will i know there is 2 one each side on the underside just above the clocks, if you get what i mean.

We wanted a set 'just in case'. £240 from a main dealer, they ordered them from Germany.

Take the car back and ask for the key's to be sorted or get your money back ;)
